I Am Relieved To Know I Am Not A Golem

March 4th, 2007

I just figured out that March 9th marks the one year anniversary of The Lost Turntable! It also probably marks the three month anniversary of people actually visiting The Lost Turntable. So, I will be caving to requests from all you jerks that leave comments asking me to repost songs by reposting some of them throughout the week. So expect a lot of “greatest hits” updates throughout the week. If you already haven’t harassed me about an awesome song that you couldn’t get a hold of because you were too damn late to the party, leave a comment now asking for it or forever hold your pieces.

Josie Cotton
(Let’s Do) The Blackout
This is the b-side to Josie’s first/last/only hit ‘Johnny, Are You Queer?’ I went on Youtube to try and find a video for that song and discovered way way way too many homemade anime music videos for it. Yaoi fans are scary sometimes.

Was (Not Was)
Wheel Me Out
Hello Operator…I Mean My Dad…I Mean Police…I Don’t Even Remember Who I Am
Okay, so this is proof my mind “works” in very odd ways sometime. This is the stream-of-conciosusness thought process my mind went through when I found this single, “Hey, those guys did that 80s dance song ‘Walk The Dinosaur’, I really liked that song when I was kid. Man I used to love dinosaurs, I miss that one cartoon Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, this song could’ve been the theme song to that show, they just would’ve had to change ‘I walk the’ to ‘Cadillacs’ it totally would’ve worked. Why’d they cancel that show? It was so awesome, the video game totally sucked. I heard it was a comic book too, I should try to find it sometime. I wonder if it got made into a cartoon because of the success of the TMNT crossover into animation? When’s that new TMNT movie coming out? That looks good. I hope it’s better than TMNT3, why the fuck did they go back in time? What a dumb idea…”

Anyways…these tracks are off of their very first single for Ze Records. Even if you didn’t like their big hit you should check these ones out because these tracks from 1980 are way way ahead of their time and probably influenced the entire dance scene of the 80s. ‘Wheel Me Out’ seems to be based on an illegal sample of ‘You Belong To The City’ and ‘Hello Operator…’ has to be one of the best song titles of all-time.

2 Men A Drum Machine & A Trumpet
Tired Of Getting Pushed Around
Tired Of Getting Pushed Around (Mayhem Mix)
From great song titles to great names for a band. 2 Men A Drum Machine & A Trumpet were really just two men, David Steele and Andy Cox. Fans of great early 80s music should recognize them as two of the founding members of The English Beat. Fans of not-so-great late 80s music might recognize them as two-thirds of Fine Young Cannibals.

Men At Work
Who Can It Be Now (Special Version)
F-19
According to the promo single from which these tracks came from this version of ‘Who Can It Be Now’ is a ‘special remix.’ I don’t know what makes it special and I’m not about to dig out my copy of Business As Usual to find out. F-19 is a nice little instrumental B-side.

Some New Romantic TV Sound

March 1st, 2007

Midterms are the devil’s work – especially when the professor schedules a comprehensive essay exam the same day a huge group presentation project is due. I feel as if I’m far to old to deal with lazy 19-year-old girls who can’t get their work done for a team project because they’re too busy recovering from a night of ‘clubbing.’ Oh well, New Wave music will set me free.

ABC

The Night You Murdered Love (Sheer Chic Mix)
The Night You Murdered Love (The Whole Story)
Love had it coming, we all know that. The ‘Sheer Chic mix’ of the song incorporates a little bit of Chic’s ‘Freak Out’ into it. This is from 1987…so it might be the first ‘mash-up’ ever! The ‘Whole Story’ is about twice as long as the original version and includes a very odd rap by someone calling herself Contessa Lady V. ‘The Whole Story’ is available on some CD reissues of Alphabet City. I took these from the 12” single.

ABC
King Without A Crown (The Mendelsohn Mix)
King Without A Crown (The Monarchy Mix)
Look Of Love (Live)
Poison Arrow (Live)
All Of My Heart (Live)
All of these tracks are off of the 12” single for King Without A Crown. Both of these remixes are better than the original in my opinion. According to the back of the sleeve the live tracks are from a concert at the Boston Metro on 12/17/82.

Various Artists
8
8.5
9
Various Artists is the name of the artist – that’s the worst name for a band or performer in the history of music, and can be added to the ever growing list of “bands impossible to search for on Google” right next to ‘The The’ and ‘!!!’. At least with those bands you can search for song titles, but the majority of work by Various Artists (which is really just a dude named Thorsten Profrock) are just numbers. I guess that’s one way to beat file-sharing services. These three tracks are off of an EP he released a few years ago. This is some super-ambient experimental shit. If you like Aphex Twin and other artists of that ilk you should dig it. If not then don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Kinky Gone Home

February 27th, 2007

It’s been over a week since my last update?!?! It’s midterm time for me right now and that’s kind of eating all my spare time. Learning is totally overrated and stuff. An odd collection of oddities today, including Italian dance music and proto-punk/rap. Enjoy.

Kinky Go
Gimme The Love (Vocal Version)
Gimme The Love (Instrumental)
So there was a genre called ‘Disco Italo’? Who knew? I guess the Italians knew, but whatever. From what I can tell this was the only song Kinky Go ever released…my, what could have been. This song is strangely addictive in a chewing-on-a-cold-sore kind of way.

Erasure
Blue Savannah (Out Of The Blue Mix)
Blue Savannah (Remix/Edit)
Blue Savannah (Blue Dub)
More Erasure equals more happy.

Lou Reed
My Red Joystick (Remix)
My Red Joystick (Instrumental)
Hearing Lou Reed singing about his “red joystick” is a little creepy and weird…even for Lou Reed. These remixes are off of the 12” single for the song. The original version is on New Sensations.

Lou Reed
The Original Wrapper (Extended Version)
The Original Wrapper (Remix Single Version)
The Original Wrapper (Dub Version)
Video Violence (Remix Version)
Okay, as if Lou singing a pop song about his red joystick wasn’t weird enough, Lou raps on ‘The Original Wrapper’ (I guess the title is an AMAZING pun). Both of these tracks are off of a 12” single. The original versions of them are on Mistrial, which is a Lou Reed album most Lou Reed fans can’t stand. I never heard it but I have to say that I’m a little curious about it after hearing these oddball tracks. I should probably buy Transformer first though, there’s probably some music geek rule about that being your first Lou Reed album.

Jazz Fusion For Punk Rockers In Love

February 19th, 2007

Nothing incredibly bizarre or rare today, just some nice tunes. I got some more soundtracks I’ll be posting later in the week, including one to a movie that I can’t even locate on the IMDB! I’ve never found a movie that wasn’t on the IMDB before – do I get a cookie for that?

Billy Idol – Flesh For Fantasy (Below The Belt Mix)
Random 80s remix #1.

Eurythmics – Would I Lie To You (An Eric ‘ET’ Thorngren Mix)
Random 80s remix #2.

Paul Hardcastle
Don’t Waste My Time (Extended Version)
Loitering With Intent
Moonhopper
Okay, so ‘Don’t Waste My Time’ is kind of a generic dance song that is kind of forgettable, both ‘Loitering WIth Intent’ and ‘Moonhopper’ are awesome tracks though – and ‘Moonhopper’ really has an early-ambient feel to it. I’m digging them. ‘Moonhopper’ is on a few greatest hits compilations, as is the original version of ‘Don’t Waste My Time.’ I don’t think ‘Loitering With Intent’ is on any proper album though, and has only been released on EPs and singles.

Pigbag
Whoops There Goes My Body II
Sunny Day
Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag
Let me get this straight…there was a funk, jazz post-punk/new-wave fusion band and no one told me? Various versions of ‘Sunny Day’ and ‘Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag’ are available on several Pigbag compilations, but ‘Whoops There Goes My Body II’ doesn’t seem to be on CD at all.

My Only Ska Post Ever

February 19th, 2007

Soundtrack From The Movie Dance Craze
I’ve never been a big ska fan and I think the genre peaked in the early 80s. So this soundtrack find was cool for me. Dance Craze is like the Urgh! of Ska movies, and has a lot of great live cuts that aren’t available anywhere else. The CD version has some more songs than this vinyl one, but it also doesn’t have any tracks by Madness, and I’d rather have the latter than the former. The tracks are listed in their original track order, which is why the bands are a little spaced out and out of order.
The Specials – Concrete Jungle
The English Beat – Mirror In The Bathroom
Bad Manners – Lip Up Fatty
Madness – Razor Blade Alley
The Selecter – Three Minute Hero
The Bodysnatchers – Easy Life
The English Beat – Big Shot
Madness – One Step Beyond
The English Beat – Ranking Full Stop
The Specials – Man At C&A
The Selecter – Missing Words
Bad Manners – Inner London Violence
Madness – Night Boat To Cairo
The Selecter – Too Much Pressure
The Specials – Nite Klub

Space Cowboys and O.J. Simpson

February 16th, 2007

Two more Jerry Goldsmith scores tonight. Both of these movies not only featured scores by Goldsmith, but both were also directed by Peter Hyams and while I haven’t seen either, both seem awesomely awful.

Outland Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Okay, so this movie is about a small mining town being overrun by drug smugglers. Sound boring? Well, did I mention it’s the mining town is in space?!? Oh, and the Marshal trying to stop the drugs is played by Sean Connery!?! And that the head smuggler is Peter Boyle?!? And I’ve never seen this movie because?

Capricorn One Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
When NASA discovers their impending mission to Mars is doomed to fail, they fake it and force the astronauts to comply in the hoax. The astronauts escape and try to alert people of the truth, at which point mysterious government agents start gunning them down. If the plot of this flick wasn’t weird enough, the cast is even more out there, with James Brolin, Sam Waterson and OJ Simpson(!!) starring as the astronauts. Elliot Gould and Telly Savalas also star in the film as a reporter and crop duster (that’s right Kojak is a crop duster) in on the conspiracy. That’s the best/worst cast ever.

Let’s Get Crazy

February 14th, 2007

Wow, more constructive criticism from Pitchfork about how much Jet sucks! At least they found a video that wasn’t older than the internet this time. It’s nice to see that jokes about piss-drinking and primates are enjoyed by more than just junior high kids.

Stupid Wankers.

Get Crazy Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

If you know this movie then you either worked at a video store or watched way too much late night TV in the late-80s. If you want to know anything about it check out this review from The Unknown Movies, a great site covering movies that have fallen through the cracks over the years. This is an odd soundtrack, not every track is a winner but it’s full of obscure tracks by some great artists as well as a punk-rocker turned casting director.

Sparks – Get Crazy
Sparks Rocks. This version of the title track to the film has never been put out on CD though, although an alternate take of it is available on the import rarities compilation entitled The Hell Collection.

Lori Eastside & Nada – You Can’t Make Me
The best new-wave song sung by a casting director you’ll ever hear.

The Ramones – Chop Suey
Of no relation to the System Of A Down song of the same name. This appeared as a bonus track to Pleasant Dreams when it was re-released as a deluxe CD.

Marshall Crenshaw – It’s Only A Movie (AKA But, But)
Crenshaw has his die-hard fans but I’m not one of them. I have nothing against the dude I just don’t know much about him. This is a nice song and was never put on any Crenshaw CD as far as I can tell.

Lou Reed – Little Sister
How the hell did he show up on this one? This track was on a box set as well but as Lou Reed tracks go it’s pretty rare. Not bad too, a little odd for Lou.

Lori Eastside & Nada -I’m Not Gonna Take It
The second-best new-wave song sung by a casting director you’ll ever hear.

Malcolm McDowell – Hot Shot
Yes, that Malcolm McDowell. He’s channeling his inner Jagger here and doing an alright job.

Bill Henderson – The Blues Had A Baby And They Named It Rock & Roll
I have no idea who this is, pretty decent song though.

Fear – Hoochie Coochie Man
What the fuck? The real crazy thing is that this isn’t even the strangest cover Fear ever did – their take on ‘We Gotta Get Out Of This Place’ is just wrong. I don’t think this cover has ever appeared on CD.

Michael Boddicker/Howard Kaylan & Cast – Starscape/Auld Lang Syne
The last two tracks of the album are mixed together so I made them one. Michael Boddicker is a session musician that played on a lot of the tracks for this record and worked with Michael Jackson when he was still black. Howard Kaylan was in The Turtles and was the Ed of Flo & Eddie. Neither of these songs were ever released anywhere else.

Let’s Get Wild

February 14th, 2007

I was halfway through this post last night when freezing rain managed to somehow knock out my internet access! Sigh.

The Wild Life – Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Cameron Crow followed up Fast Times At Ridgemont High with this flop of a movie that starred Chris Penn, Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson and Rick Moranis. I’ve never seen the flick (it’s been out of print for years) but I haven’t heard many good things about it. Supposedly it’s utter failure is one the reasons that Cameron Crowe assumed more creative control and took the helm as director for his next movie – Say Anything. The soundtrack sure is an odd one though, with several well-known musicians contributing songs you can’t find anywhere else:

Edward Van Halen – Donut City
The score to The Wild Life was primarily done by Eddie but he only gets one song on the soundtrack. This rarity has never seen the light of day on CD and is a good example of pre-Haggar, pre-suck Eddie Van Halen.

Hanover Fist – Metal Of The Night
This Canadian metal band released one album and then vanished into oblivion.

Charlie Sexton with Ron Wood – It’s Not Easy
Most of you probably know Ron Wood, he’s been in The Rolling Stones, The Faces and The Jeff Beck Group. Charlie Sexton’s a dude that’s been around, most recently as Bob Dylan’s guitarist. He’s pretty damn good. This Stone cover turned up on a tribute album in the late nineties, strangely enough.

Andy Summers – Human Shout
You’re going to see a lot more of Andy this year, since he got back together with Sting and Stewart Copeland to go on tour as The Police for the first time in God knows how long. This track never appeared on any of his solo albums – it sounds like an above-average Police song minus The Sting.

Bananarama – Wild Life
The title track to the film and one of the only tracks that is easily available on CD – it appeared on Bananarama’s second album and several compilations by the band.

What Is This– Mind My Have Still I
This never-was band is assured a permanent footnote in rock history as it featured early Red Hot Chilli Peppers Hillel Slovak and Jack Iron, who also served as drummer for Pearl Jam for a time being.

Van Stephenson – Make It Glamorous
This dude was in a country group called Blackhawk – that’s about all I could find out about him. This song ain’t too hot either.

Peter Case – Who’s Gonna Break The Ice
If you know who this is then you must love 80s college-rock, as Case was a member of The Plimsouls, an overlooked band who recorded one of the greatest pop songs of the decade ‘A Million Miles Away’ (which was subsequently butchered by the Goo Goo Dolls several years later). While he’s recorded several solo records, this song hasn’t appeared on any of them. It’s a damn shame too because it’s pretty good.

The Three O’Clock – I Go Wild
According to Allmusic these guys are the ‘quintessential paisley underground band’. I have no idea what that means – the song sure is groovy though.

Louise Goffin with Charlotte Caffey – No Trespassing
Goffin is Carol King’s kid. She sings the theme song to Gilmour Girls with her. This song is not on any of her solo records. Charlotte Caffey was the guitarist for The Go-Gos and wrote “We Got The Beat.”

Watership Down(er)

February 13th, 2007

The first of several soundtracks I’ll be posting this week, this is the only only featuring dead bunnies.

Watership Down – The Original Soundtrack From The Film
Yes I’m sure Watership Down was an amazing movie and even better book but I have no desire to ever see it. I don’t really want to see an animated movie that has cute little bunnies being eaten and killed. I have enough problems man, I don’t need that shit. This soundtrack is really hard to find though, so if you want to relive memories of bunnies being gutted via a lovely Art Garfunkel tune then hey, go nuts.
