Also, Depeche Mode.

Okay, now that my rant is out the way…MUSIC!

Depeche Mode
Fragile Tension (Stephan Bodzin Remix)
Fragile Tension (Kris Menace’s Love On Laserdisc Remix)
Hole To Feed (Paul Woolford’s Easyfun Ethereal Disco Mix)
Perfect (Ralphi Rosario Dub)
Peace (Hervé’s ‘Warehouse Frequencies’ Remix)
Peace (Sander Van Doorn Remix)

I almost went a full month without putting up some Depeche Mode. Thank god I fixed that. These are from the 2×12” single for Fragile Tension/Hole To Feed. Notice that they are mostly different than the remixes that are on the CD single of the same name that is readily available on Amazon and I highly recommend buying. Also notice that one of these remixes is called “Kris Menace’s Love On Laserdisc Remix.” And speaking as someone who has a LaserDisc player hooked up to his computer, I say bravo to that.

Tripping on Ambient House…and ice.

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Did all of you have a wonderful Christmastime? Did you contract a case of the flu that required an ambulance ride to an Akron area hospital? Well then you had a better Christmas break than I did you bastards.

And today I fell on the ice and hurt my back. 2009 can’t fucking end soon enough. My New Year’s celebrations will consist of me, my comfy new couch and my Kraftwerk box set. Screw parties. Trans Europe Express makes the pain go away.

The Orb
Blue Room
Blue Room – Radio 7
Blue Room – Excerpt 605
Towers of Dub (Mad Professor Remix)

The single mix of “Blue Room” is a beautiful thing. It almost makes me wish I had some painkillers on hand (actually, that has more to do with the previously mentioned fall on the ice). It’s also epic; clocking in at 39 minutes and 58 seconds long. I’ve actually listened to this sucker all the way through multiple times today, and that alone proves that I spend too much time in front of the computer listening to music.

“Towers of Dub” may not be the best song of all time but fuck me sideways if it doesn’t have one of the grooviest basslines ever laid to wax. This mix has its ups and downs, but it end is pretty damned good.

In the interest of honest I will admit that I swiped these tracks from another blog, Everything On My iPod. However, my links are directly to the files on my server, and not to their Rapidshare account, that would be rude.

Pete Shelley
On Your Own (New York Mix)
Please forgive me…but I cannot endure it any longer

“On Your Own” is a good track, I’m not denying that, but the real attention grabber here is the B-side. “Please Forgive Me…” is a bizarre seven-and-a-half minute instrumental of drums and synths that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Deep Forest record if it wasn’t so damn ominous and awesome. Actually, it sounds like some perfect combination of Deep Forest, Tangerine Dream and Vangelis‘ score to Blade Runner. If you think it’s boring give it time, it peaks around the 5:20 mark. It’s good, and when I listen to it I am shocked that it wasn’t in the score to Megaforce or something.

Rammstein
Stripped
Yes, this is a cover of Depeche Mode’s Stripped by German industrial perverts Rammstein, and yes, it sounds exactly how you would expect it to. In fact, the version you just know imagined in your head is probably spot on. So yeah, it’s kinda dumb. It’s also kinda fun so enjoy. This is from a Depeche Mode tribute CD.

Insert Clever "See You/Swine Flu" Pun Here

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I am beginning to feel not-so-dead. I will celebrate this amazing occasion with Depeche Mode. It’s how I celebrate all things worth celebrating, and several things not worth celebrating.

And yes, I know I could have made a Black Celebration joke there, but I’m above that. Actually, I’m too tired to think of one.

Depeche Mode
My Secret Garden (Live)
See You (Live)
Satellite (Live)
Tora! Tora! Tora! (Live)
New Life (Live)
Boys Say Go! (Live)
Nothing To Fear (Live)
The Meaning Of Love (Live)
Just Can’t Get Enough (Live)
A Photograph Of You (Live)
Shout (Live)
Photographic (Live)

There are a finite number of vinyl/limited edition Depeche Mode releases out there. And I’m assuming that not all of will make their way to Jerry’s Records, located on 2135 Murray Ave. in Pittsburgh, PA. However, as long as they do I’ll keep buying them. These tracks are from three separate limited edition singles, when you take all the B-sides to them they form what is probably a complete concert, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon on the 25th of October, 1982. That’s right, these singles are like Voltron – powerful on their own but when combined they form something unstoppable! Okay, I don’t know how “unstoppable” Depeche Mode live is but you get my drift.

We’re All Lollapawinners!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I wrote a lot already about Lollapalooza. First I had to semi-live blog it at ESDmusic, and then I had to write in-depth reviews of every act I saw at Bullz-Eye. I’m kind of Lollapaloozed out. So I’m going to keep this brief. My photos are in the process of uploading to Flickr right now, so if you want more Lolla goodness I suggest you check them out.

I don’t have much to say about the bands. Depeche Mode was AWESOME. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs made me lose my mind, The Killers were absolutely satisfactory. I don’t have much to add about that. However, everyone who comes to this site knows that my review of a concert doesn’t end with how I feel about the bands. No, I spend just as much time judging the audiences as I do the people that they are watching. In the past I have been…harsh on people. Crafting guides to concert etiquette not once, but twice. Concerts, especially large multi-day outdoor concerts are where I usually loose my faith in humanity thanks to drunken fratboys, socially inept hipsters and idiot teenybopper girls who think the world is their playground and treat everyone else like shit. Last year was especially bad, and I left with no hope for humanity as a whole.

This year, was another story entirely.

People were actually…nice. I know, it’s just as weird for me to say it as it is for you to read it, but I actually had a good time talking to interacting with the people around me this time. Sure, there were a few jers *cough*Tool fans*cough* who talked too much, wanted to start shit and tried to strong arm their way through the crowds, but for the most part everyone was cool. And if they weren’t cool they were usually nice when I called them out on it. Some dudes were chatting up a storm during Depeche Mode and I asked the to please be quiet or move…and they actually apologized and shut up! I’ve never seen that before! I guess if you’re going to be an idiot you can be a nice one.

I even had my faith in humanity restored a couple times near the end of the festival on Sunday. The first time came during Dan Deacon. I posted a video to this before and if you haven’t watched it I suggest you do so. It’s Deacon performing “Jack And Jill” while one of his bandmates was in a cleared circle in the audience, basically serving as a conductor telling the masses what to do (raise your hands, wave, clap, etc.) near the end of his bit he started throwing stuff up in the air. Frist only a few pieces of paper came up, then a decent-sized volley of water bottles were tossed, but then a freaking wave of water bottles filled the sky. It wasn’t a vindicitive maneuver intended to harm, but a celebratory statement by the crowd. It was beautfiul man. After the show I managed to find Deacon outside packing up. I ran upto him, shook his hand and said “Holy shit your show blew my fucking mind!” His reaction led me to believe he gets that a lot.

Later on I got my spot for The Killers. Next to me was a 14-year-old kid and his dad who bought day passeses because the kid loves The Killers. They’re not his favorite band however, that would be Nirvana. Little dude was even rocking a Nirvana t-shirt.

Okay, call me sentimental, overly sensitive or whatever, but seeing that kicked ass. After watching hundreds of emo kids with stupid hats and Hot Topic shoes walk by, finding one kid who still believed that Nirvana was the greatest fucking rock band in the world kind of gave me a little bit of hope for the future. I told the kid to pick up some Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney and Pixies in order to increase his grunge knowledge. He seemed excited to find out about bands that influenced Kurt and company.

Go little dude go.

Okay, this is it, the final massive Depeche Mode post! I’m finally caught up, and have now posted every single Depeche Mode remix and rarity in my collection. I’m sure there will be more later, but for now it feels nice to finally get all of these bastards out of the way. My review of Sounds Of The Universe will be up at Bullz-Eye in later this month, but my early impressions certainly are positive. I like it more than Playing The Angel, but nothing on the album is as good as my favorite tracks from that album, “A Pain That I’m Used To” and “John The Revelator.”

Depeche Mode Clearinghouse Sale

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

I finally got my uber-ultra-super-fantastic mega deluxe version of Pearl Jam’s Ten in the mail today. It comes with the album, the remixed album, b-sides and rare cuts, a live concert from 1992 (on vinyl), a DVD of their unplugged performance, a cassette tape of Eddie’s audition tape, memorabilia, posters, books, photos and the kitchen sink. So I’ll be enveloped in that motherfucker for the next week or so. I plan on making a massive Pearl Jam post sometime this week or the next, which will include some stuff that’s exclusive to the huge box set as well other assorted Ten-era material that was left off the set and is still rare. Until then here’s a bunch of Depeche Mode songs.

Depeche Mode
Barrel Of A Gun (Underworld Hard Mix)
Barrel Of A Gun (United Mix)
Painkiller (Plastikman Mix)
Barrel Of A Gun (3 Phase Mix)
Barrel Of A Gun (One Inch Punch Mix V2)
Barrel Of A Gun (Underworld Soft Mix)
Dream On (Pink Noise Club Mix)
Dream On (Dave Clarke Club Mix)
Dream On (Bushwacka Tough Guy Vocal Mix)
Dream On (Dave Clarke Acoustic Mix)
Dream On (Pink Noise Dub)
Dream On (Bushwacka Tough Guy Dub)
Dream On (Bushwaka Blunt Mix)
Dream On (Kid 606 Mix)
In anticipation of Sounds Of The Universe I figured I’d get back to my ever-delayed Depeche Mode clearinghouse, posting the various DM tracks that I never got around to putting up. These are from various CD and 12” vinyl singles. I actually just found out I’m reviewing their new album and I’m pretty stoked. I’ve never gotten to review one of their records and I think we can all agree I’m more than qualified.

A Manifesto (with a soundtrack)

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I don’t know anyone that enjoys music more than me, and if I ever met someone who did I’d probably be scared of them. Most people who know me tease me about my obsessive nature with music, which my video-game addled friends have frequently compared to a Pokemon mentality, I gotta get’em all. I’ve demonstrated OCD behavior in the past, most of which is under control now because I focused it all towards collecting and listening to music. I now have well over a thousand records, hundreds of CDs and even a few 8-tracks and cassettes. As you may have guessed, my Mp3 collection is massive, with over 35,000 songs, adding up to 108 days of music.

I still buy most of the music I listen to. Sure I’ll download some off of BitTorrent on occasion, but for the most part I play by the rules and pay for what I want to hear. Not only that, I tend to go out of my way to buy the actual physical CD and not a digital download. I’m not a fan of digital downloads, I think the quality is substandard many of the times and they offer no real protection should my computer decide to die a fiery death. Also, I’m a real fetishist for having a physical copy of something. I like to read the linear notes, hold the case, examine the CD art. Sure, there are digital booklets for that it’s not the same. I don’t care if that’s an old-fashioned or outdated way of looking at things, that’s how I feel. I think I’m one of the good guys, going out of my way to champion music and the purchasing of it. I used to not see a reasons to download music illegally that you could find easily legally unless you A) were broke or B) just had no qualms about stealing. But that’s not been an easy position to hold up for the past few months.

It’s getting very hard for me to get the music I want in an affordable and easy manner. First it was The Smashing Pumpkins Zeitgeist album, which was released in multiple versions with different tracklistings depending on where you bought it (none of these places being an independent record store) forcing fans who wanted to be legal to buy the same album four times. Then it was Depeche Mode with the bullshit iTunes Pass version of their upcoming Sounds Of The Universe, an $18.99 subscription to the album which promises to feature “exclusive” remixes and b-sides, none of which will be on the $99.99 special edition that I already pre-ordered. This week I finally snapped when I saw Mastodon including special instrumental tracks on the iTunes version of their new album Break The Skye and Pearl Jam tacking on some bonus live cuts for the iTunes edition of the new Special Edition of Ten.

Both of these albums are also available in very expensive deluxe editions, and neither of them contain the iTunes “exclusive” tracks. The limited edition of Crack The Skye came with an awesome lithograph and extra artwork, and that clocked in at $40. That one was only available at Mastodon’s website (it’s sold out now) as was another special edition that included a t-shirt and a bonus single, which features two of the instrumentals that were supposedly “exclusive” to iTunes. Hardcore fans who bought the more expensive editions at Mastodon’s website got fucked over by being left out of the other tracks on the iTunes version. And of course, you can’t buy those tracks separately, you have to buy the album to get them all.

It’s even worse with the Pearl Jam album. The Super Deluxe version of Ten costs $150. It’s worth the money to hardcore fans (such as I) as it’s loaded with bonus vinyl, a DVD, live stuff, artwork, booklets and even a reproduction of Eddie’s demo for the band. However, it doesn’t include the Live At The Academy tracks that are on the iTunes edition. If I pay $140 bucks for a damn album, I think I should be getting all the shit that’s included on the $16.99 online edition.

And, just like half of the Mastodon “exclusives” the Live At The Academy tracks aren’t even exclusive, they were originally included on a bonus CD that came with the fan club edition of 2006 self-titled album. Pearl Jam is my favorite band in the world (Those 35,000 mp3s on my hard drive? 2,481 are Pearl Jam tracks.) and I’ve always thought they’ve done a good job of putting themselves above the typical industry bullshit. Now I’m not so sure.

The most annoying this about all this is that as a die-hard collector there’s little I can do. I’m not going to stop buying Depeche Mode or Pearl Jam albums because of shit like this, hell, it’s hard to tell if it’s even their fault with record labels becoming more and more desperate to squeeze every buck possible out of the consumer. I think the one part of the equation that deserves the most blame however is iTunes.

The iTunes store has always sucked ass, and now it sucks in stereo. In addition to these bullshit examples there are countless more of albums getting “iTunes exclusive” tracks and even more where they make it impossible to buy individual tracks (especially on soundtracks). I’m done buying from iTunes until they stop with this bullshit. It hurts the fans who just want the most music possible from their favorite bands, and it hurts the record industry by limited what independent record stores can sell. It’s also false fucking advertising. Almost every “iTunes exclusive” isn’t a fucking exclusive, it’s usually a b-side, import track, vinyl cut or other rarity that just isn’t available at any other digital store. Any “exclusive” track you find on iTunes you can usually buy somewhere else, and if you can’t…well…that’s why they invented BitTorrent. I’m done with the iTunes store, and you should be too.

Now for some “exclusive iTunes” tracks!

The Strokes (featuring Regina Spektor)
Modern Girls and Old Fashioned Men
This track was my first exposure to the fraud that is an “iTunes exclusive” I saw it at their store and bought it right away. Then I found it a week later on a 7” single that had amazing artwork. I felt screwed over. A shame since it’s such a fucking amazing track. I love Regina Spektor and this track makes me yearn for a Julian Casablancas/Regina duet album. It would have to be better than First Impressions Of Earth.

Depeche Mode
The Sun And The Moon And The Stars (Electronic Periodic’s Microdrum Mix)
Oh Well (Black Light Odyssey Dub)
The two tracks so far released from the iTunes Pass edition of Sounds Of The Universe. These tracks will not be on the deluxe edition of the album which, as I stated earlier, costs $100. Oh yeah, that’s fair. The remix for “The Sun And The Moon…” is unbe-fucking-lievably good and totally worth buying, but you can’t if you want a physical copy of the record, so don’t. Steal it instead.

Smashing Pumpkins
Stellar
The iTunes exclusive track to Zeitgeist. I tried posting this one the week the album came out, but couldn’t find the fucker. Time heals all wounds.

Kings Of Leon
Knocked Up (Lykke Li vs. Rodeo Remix)
Another track that’s labeled as an iTunes exclusive but is in fact not. This is an awesome remix/mash-up of a great song though. Too bad I bought it under false pretense on iTunes, I would have paid much more for a physical copy, but they told me it was an exclusive so I didn’t bother to check. You shouldn’t either.

Pearl Jam – Live At The Academy 1992
Not only did iTunes slab on four tracks of this concert that was readily available at Pearl Jam’s website and call them “exclusive” but their picks for which ones to use sucked. “Speed Wash,” “Sonic Reducer” and “Porch” were totally the way to go. This is the full CD which came with my copy of Pearl jam album. I posted this back then, now I’m posting it again.

Holy Shit That’s a lot of Depeche Mode (Reposts Day 1)

Monday, March 9th, 2009

If you like Depeche Mode then you’re welcome. If not then just close the browser now and come back in a few days. More than half of these are requests, but I threw in some bonuses as well.

And most surprisingly, it’s all relevant since Depeche Mode has a new album coming out next month! And not surprisingly at all, there’s something about it that pisses me off!

As many of you may figured out, I’m something of a dedicated Depeche Mode fan. My interest in the band is relatively new however, as I didn’t really get into the group until I started collecting vinyl a few years ago. For me Depeche Mode has always been a singles band and a large part of those singles have been the remixes, which I usually like better than the original album versions. Listen to the Electronicat remix of “The Dead Of Night” if you doubt me; that mix is the shit, the original is kind of just shit.

Singles aren’t what they used to be though, especially in America where they pretty much solely exist as imports. So I was at first happy as hell that Depeche Mode was planning on releasing a special version of their new album Sounds of the Universe that included a bonus disc of remixes and b-sides, and an additional bonus disc of demos. I would get the best of both worlds in one bitchin’ package. Sure, it cost a lot (80 bucks) but it came with all kinds of other goodies, including a DVD, two books and nifty packaging. That kind of shit isn’t for everyone for sure, but I dig the bonus features. I’m the douchebag who bought the deluxe version of Aliens on laserdisc back in the 90s for $120 because I wanted to see the deleted scenes.

So what’s the problem? Well, in addition to that deluxe version the group is also releasing the album on iTunes with something called an “iTunes Pass.” This pass, which is 19 bucks, includes the regular edition of the album, as well as exlcusive content that will be rolled out over following months. This exclusive content includes remixes that will not be available anywhere else. So if you’re like me, a die-hard fan who collects the remixes like an 8-year-old Japanese boy collects Pokemon, you’re screwed, you have to not only buy a deluxe $80 version of an album, but you also have to but a $20 digital version just to get a few extra tracks. I know that back in the 80s if you wanted to get all the remixes and b-sides you were going to get some overlap, however the cost was far cheaper. How much did a 12” single cost in 1987? I have no idea but I bet it didn’t cost fans the adjusted-for-inflation price of $100 bucks to get all the versions of “Strangelove.”

When bands do shit like this they are practically forcing their fans to go online and download the tracks illegally. Why shouldn’t they? It’s like when Billy Douchebag Corgan released three (or was it four, I lost count) versions of the last “Smashing Pumpkins” album. They only do this because they are getting extra money from each distributor they provide an “exclusive” version to and beacuse they know some stupid sick moron will actually go out and buy every version they can because they are fucking fans. They are purposely milking their most devoted fans for as much money as possible just because they think they can.

Now that is…what’s the word I’m looking for…oh yeah, wrong.

Anyways, first the reposts. I’m going to remind everyone that these are of varying quality, and I’m fairly certain some of these are from my shitty turntable that spun too fast, so I don’t want to hear any bitching. And, everyone download the Electronicat remix, it’s the best thing ever.

Depeche Mode
The Dead Of Night (Electronicat Remix)
Goodnight Lovers (Isan Falling Leaf Mix)
It’s No Good (Bass Bounce Mix)
Lilliam (Robag Wruhme Slomoschen Kikker)
Shake The Disease (Remixed Extended Version)
Nothing (Zip-Hop Mix)
Nothing (Dub)
Strangelove (Highjack Remix)
Strangelove (Maxi-Mix)
Strangelove (Midi-Mix)
Nothing (Live)
World In My Eyes (Oil Tank Mix)
World In My Eyes (Dub In My Eyes Mix)
Sea Of Sin (Sensoria Mix)
World In My Eyes (Mode To Joy Mix)

And now the new shit:
Policy Of Truth (Capitol Mix)
Policy Of Truth (Pavlov’s Dub)
Policy Of Truth (Beat Box Mix)
I Feel You (Swamp Mix)
New Life (R.E. Mix)
Kaleid (When Worlds Mix)
Precious (Sasha’s Spooky Mix)
Precious (Sasha’s Gargantuan Vocal Mix)
See You (Extended Version)
In Your Memory (Slik Mix Edit)

I have exactly 35 more Depeche Mode remixes and b-sides I have not yet posted. They will be on this site by the end of the month.

More (non-Depeche Mode) reposts coming soon.

Random Blog Post (GO STEELERS)

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Okay Destrukto, I have a rule. If you’re going to post a series of links then you have describe what the fuck they are. I’m not downloading random files of the interweb, and I don’t suggest anyone else here does either. And who the hell is Sylvia? That comment is all kinds of confusing you little bastard.

Anyways, I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. Mine was shit, but the Steelers won so it wasn’t all bad. I said before that if you’re a racist/sexist/homophobic asshole you can’t download my songs, but I forgot to add Ravens fans to that list. If you rock purple jerseys and live in Baltimore I don’t want you rocking out at my online synthpop dance party.

Don’t piss me off mofo, or I’ll send Pacman Jones after you. You can pay him in strip club cover charges, it’s cheap.

Depeche Mode
Just Can’t Get Enough (Schizo Mix)
Any Second Now (Altered)
Leave In Silence (Longer)
Master And Servant (Slavery Whip Mix)
I promised more Depeche Mode and I finally delivered. Thse are from the awkwardly-titled promo 2XLP single “Selections From The Commercially Available Limited Edition Box Sets One and Two,” so you can probably imagine that they are also available on those previously plugged box sets. I have two of those box sets and I can tell you that they are worth the money.

New Order
Blue Order Mega-Mix 1
Blue Order Mega-Mix 2
Bootleg megamixes! From a 12” single called “Blue Order.”

BONUS
Bonus Bronski Beats
The B-side to the Blue Order mixes, and if you haven’t figured it out yet it’s a Bronski Beat megamix.

Big Country
Wonderland (Extended Mix)
Giant
All Fall Together
Angle Park
Heart And Soul
Lost Patrol (Live)
I put up the tracks from the German version of this one a long time ago, but now I got the Japanese version and instead of just putting up the bonus tracks from that version, I’m reposting the whole thing since my recording equipment is a shitload better and thse rips sound a hell of a lot cleaner. The title track and “Lost Patrol” are re-recorded reposts, but “All Fall Together”, “Angle Back,” and “Heart And Soul” are brand new to Lost Turntable. The only one that is a flat-out repost is “Giant,” it’s not on the Japanese single, but it’s an awesome instrumental version of “All Fall Together” so I thought it was worth the redundancy.
