Random happytime remixes.

Macy Gray
Sexual Revolution (Blaze Shelter Vocal Mix)
Sexual Revolution (Miguel Migs Petalpusher Vocal Remix)

I miss Macy Gray! I guess it’s not really fair to say that. It’s not like Macy Gray is dead or anything. She put out a record just two years ago. What I really miss is a world that gave a shit about Macy Gray. Her voice is so cool. No one has ever or ever will sound like her. Truly one-of-a-kind.

SHE’S ALSO ON THE LAST GREAT BLACK EYED PEAS SINGLE FOR FUCK’S SAKE!

Her first two albums are just amazing stuff. They have fantastic love songs like the immortal “I Try” and the almost-as-good “Sweet Baby,” but the best tracks on both are the ones where Macy is horny as hell and DTF. Horny Macy Gray is the best Macy Gray because she wants to let you know that she’s down to do some hardcore nasty shit, not at all low-key about it, but always skirting the line right against outright vulgarity. She’s the hard PG-13 or soft R or sex jams.

This is a great jam, and the remixes both do a fantastic job of balancing the jazzier aspects of the original cut while still slicing in some nice dance beats. I sadly don’t have this album nor her first on my computer for some reason. Guess I’ll have to pick them up again sometime.

As killer as this tune is, if I had to name my all-time favorite “Macy Gray is down to do the deed” track, it actually wouldn’t be a Macy Gray song at all, it would be her collaboration with Fatboy Slim, “Love Life,” off of his 2000 album Halfway Between The Gutter and the Stars. The lyrics to that song are just fantastic, with one the greatest outros in the history of music:

Said I’m gonna A ya
And I’m gonna B ya
And I’m gonna C ya
Gonna D ya
If I E ya
Cause I wanna F ya
Yeah, I wanna F ya
Yeah, I wanna F ya

Its the horny alphabet song.

Talking Heads
Blind (Extended Remix)
Blind (Deaf, Dub and Blind Mix)
Blind (Beats)

I could’ve sworn that I shared these remixes at one point. These rips are taken from a fairly recent purchase I made here in Tokyo, but I recognized the mixes when I heard them. I know for a fact that these were on my late 2000s iPod. I have a vivid memory of driving around Pittsburgh with my friend who found David Byrne’s vocal deliver on “BLIND BLIND BLIND BLIND BLIND” the funniest thing ever. She rolled down the window and screamed along with him, much to the confusion of the people we passed by.

She may have been high at the time.

But I never shared them! So here they are now! Add Talking Heads to the list of immensely popular 80s bands with a substantive back catalog of remixes that have yet to be re-released in any way at all. Argh. Are all of their remixes locked in a vault next to Madonna’s remixes or something? They’re driving me crazy keeping this shit buried. At least it makes finding tracks for this blog easier.

Taking my Lack of Talent to South Beach

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

This will most likely be my only post for the week. Barring any further disruption (…long story) I will be heading to Miami this Thursday for the Ultra Music Festival to see Duran Duran, Underworld, Hybrid, Pendulum, Erasure, Royksopp, Ed Rush & Optical, The Chemical Brothers and about a billion other electronic acts.

I’m getting to South Beach on Thursday afternoon. The concert, however, does not start until Friday afternoon, so if anyone out there has any entertainment recommendations for someone who does not like to go to clubs, get shitfaced and have creepy anonymous sex with an equally shitfaced stranger, please let me know. I don’t have high hopes though, as that appears to be all there is to do in Maimi from what I’ve heard. Well, that and betray Ohio. Oh snap!

Anyways, musics!

Portishead Remixes
Something For Kate – Easy (Portishead Remix)

Earthling – 1st Transmission (Earthead) Portishead Remix)
Primal Scream – Give Out But Don’t Give Up (Portishead Remix)

Ride – Moonlight Medicine (Portishead Remix)
Machine Gun Fellatio – Horny Blonde (Portishead Remix)
I know very little, and in some case nothing, about any of these bands. I got these tracks off of a bootleg vinyl compilation called Portishead Remixes. In case you can’t tell from that incredibly creative title, it is a collection of remixes by Portishead. I love their remixes, because they somehow have the ability to take any track, no matter what the genre, and turn it into a Portishead song. Heavy metal, house, alt-rock, whatever, they Portishead the fuck out of it. Did I just make “Portishead” a verb? If you got a problem with that I will Propellerhead the shit out of you.

As for the bands, well, like I said, I know very little about them. I can tell you that the Something For Kate track reminds me of Bush in a good way, and that the Ride track reminds me of trippy Oasis, which makes sense since at last one of the dudes in that band ended up in Oasis. The rest, well, really sound like Portishead. Also, Machine Gun Fellatio? Best horrible band name ever.

Mantronix
Simple Simon (You Gotta Rock Hard)
Simple Simon (You Dubba Regard)
Simple Simon (Dub Gotta Rock Hard)
Damn. This is a great track. I really need to get me some more Mantronix. While browsing them on Wikipedia, I noticed that Pitchfork gave the deluxe edition of their self-titled debut an 8.08 out of 10. Well played Pitchfork, well played. (For those who don’t get the joke, click here) These are from a 12″ single.

Talking Heads
The Lady Don’t Mind (Extended Version)
Right now I’m watching Lopez Tonight on mute and fat bald priest is holding a raffle while an old Jewish man dances on a strip pole. I’m never unmuting my television again.

Oh, and this remix of “The Lady Don’t Mind” comes from a 12″ single. See you all next week.

Liv Tyler should be Aerosmith’s new lead singer.

I’d fucking GO to that show.

I complain a lot. It’s kind of my thing. That’s how I roll. I especially complain when musicians and bands I like do shit I can’t stand. LIke when Wolfmother decided to be twats and release 80 billion versions of Cosmic Egg, or when Billy Corgan…does anything. However, I’m actually going to talk nice about a band I like, because they did something awesome.

The Foo Fighters’ released a greatest hits collection this month. Actually, they had no real say in the decision, their label decided to do it against the wishes of Dave Grohl. Like every greatest hits it has a few new songs tacked on to entice fans who own everything to shell out the extra bucks for the new songs. That’s always annoying, and what’s more annoying is that usually when there’s a greatest hits on iTunes you can’t just buy the new tracks, you have to buy the whole album.

Well that’s not the case this time, probably because Dave was against the compilation in the first place. If you just want the new tracks, you can have them, not only that, there’s an entire EP that is JUST the new tracks, making it easy and cost effective to get them. That EP also includes their cover of Wings’ “Band On The Run” which was never released in America. It’s nice to see a band reward their devoted fans instead of punishing them for a change. I doubt you’ll ever see fucking U2 do that shit (still bitter over not being able to legally just buy “The Saints Are Coming”).

Man, that was a lot of nice for me…I don’t know what to say next. Oh yeah, I remember. To the person that spammed my comments with repeated requests for a Blondie song – piss off.

Ah, I feel better now.

Deborah Harry
I Can See Clearly (The Club Mix)
I Can See Clearly (N.Y.C. Dub)
I Can See Clearly (Blonde Rave)
I Can See Clearly (Dub-a-mental)
I Can See Clearly (Boriqua Tribal Mix)

I think I’m going to have to cave and finally buy a Deborah Harry solo record. Any recommendations? I’m avoiding Koo Koo, I’ve heard that album is as bad as the cover is good. These remixes (which are all actually really fucking good) are from a 12”.

Talking Heads
Slippery People
Making Flippy Floppy

Slippery flippity floppity slippy flippy flop. Yeah…that’s all I got. Actually, strike that, I got more. What the fuck is “Making Flippy Floppy” about? Is it about screwing? “Flippy Floppy” is the best/worst euphamism for boning ever – and I’m totally gonna start using it. These remixes are from a 12” single. They are by John “Bellybean” Benitez, and if you know who that is then that means something to you.
