Sigue Sigue Repost

I have at least two really awesome posts lined up, with some great content and in the case of one, some original research and even a real interview with someone involved with the record! They’re going to be awesome.

But they also take a ton of work, so here’s some Sigue Sigue Sputnik until I get them done.

I have posted all these tracks before, however they were recorded on my old shitty turntable. These are all new recordings taken from my Technics 1200. I also originally posted most of these tracks in 2007, when no one read this blog, as opposed to now…when dozens of people read it! But if you were one of the eight people who downloaded the remixes of “Success!” back when I first posted them, download them again, these versions sound light years better.

“Love Missile F1-11” is SSS’s most well-known track, but in my opinion both “Sex Bomb Boogie” and “Success!” are far superior, especially “Success!” SSS was a band whose image and music perfectly encapsulated the mid-80s, but “Success!” is their only track that also manage to capture in lyrics everything that was brilliant and bullshit about that ultra-superficial era. It makes sense that many of the remixes incorporate aspects of the “Greed is good” speech from Wall Street, it was a creed that the members of SSS no doubt (ironically) embraced with gusto. Now, with all the Occupy Wall Street shit going down, the song is ironically relevant all over again! In my mind there are choreographed protests set to this song.

My mind is kind of weird.

Sigue Sigue Something

If you pick up on an overwhelming feeling of despair in this post, it’s because I’m writing it in Toledo. It has that effect on things.

This will be my last post for the week. Usually I’m busy during the first week of August because I’m heading to Chicago for Lollapalooza. However, I don’t get to go to Lolla this year because of reasons that I can’t even begin to get in to.

HOWEVER, I will be going to the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco next weekend. It doesn’t look as great as Lolla (too many jam bands for my taste), but I think I’ll still enjoy it.

I also plan on doing some record shopping while in San Fran (and by “some record shopping” I mean I’m going to buy ALL THE RECORDS). Anyone want to recommend some good SF record stores? I already know about Amoeba.

Since I’ll be spending most of next week in the homeland of Rice-a-roni, only expect one post. Don’t worry. It will be Big and full of great Audio. Seriously, it’s going to by Dynamite.

I don’t know what to say about this song. Even for a Sigue Sigue Sputnik song, it’s freaking weird. There’s not much to it aside from a sparse beat, a simple bassline, a sample of Beethoven’s Fifth, and completely nonsensical lyrics such as “Hong Kong hit back!”

Hit back who? Who hit them first? I’m so confused!

I’m a fairly big fan of SSS’s 80s albums. Both “Success” and “Sex Bomb Boogie” have earned themselves permanent spots on my workout mix, but I’m still on the fence with these remixes. I hope you all dig them tho.

If you’re from England then you might have a vague recollection of Curve, as they were moderately popular in the 90s. If you’re from America then you probably thought that I was typing “The Cure” for a second.

If you might recognize this song though. Although maybe you might be more familiar with this remix, as it was in this trailer.

Curve never broke through in the states, which is weird. They had a really good, radio-friendly sound that should have played over great in the Alternative Nation of the early-90s. I really can’t believe that “Horror  Head” never hit it big here. That song is beautiful. I can’t tell you how different this remix is from the original, as I am currently on my laptop, which does not have the original on it. But if I recall, they’re pretty similar. Shit this “remix” might just be the original, but the 12″ I got called it a remix, so I’m sticking with that. The other songs are great too.

 

Although now that I think about it “Love Missile” sounds gross…

Saw Girl Talk this weekend. Amazing show…odd people in attendance. Expect a full review later this week.

Right now its pushing 1AM, I have a ton of work to do and I’m tired, so I’m keeping this brief. I think the quality of tunes will make up for it though!

I bought many (many) Erasure 12” singles in Portland. Almost all at 2nd Avenue Records, which was very odd considering most of the stuff in that place was hip hop or punk rock. I was thinking of posting them all at once (making the most FABULOUS blog post ever) but I thought I’d draw it out a bit. I don’t know if my blog can take that music fabulousness at once and survive.

Oh hell yeah. I have been looking for this single for years! This totally made the trip to Oregon worth it. Well, that and seeing my family for Thanksgiving.  I love this song so much. It’s just everything great, new, weird, wonderful and stupid as hell about the 80s all in one song, which really makes sense when you find out that Giorgio Moroder produced the track. I own both Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s 80s albums, but nothing on any of them comes close to their remixes, especially the dance mix of this track and the various remixes of “Sex Bomb Boogie” and “Success!” I’ll have to dig those singles out and re-record them. I recorded those back when my turntable was only doing shit in mono. I’m sure they sound great in stereo. For those of you who may not know,  Tony James of the Sigue is now working with Mick Jones of The Clash/B.A.D. under the name Carbon/Silicon and they make wonderfully bizarre pop music together. Check them out.

I did not know that Pigeonhead was a band until about 48 hours ago when I looked them up. I always assumed it was a dude who worked with the Lo-Fidelity Allstars. I’m even more surprised that Pigeonhead was an American band! From Seattle! During the 90s grunge boom! The wonders never cease. The Low-Fiedelity Allstars remix was eventually remixed even more and put on that band’s debut album. This version is not the same as that one, it especially diverges near the end. The Biopod Mix actually kind of…sucks, but is worth listening to so you can see how to NOT remix a track with an amazing vocal performance. Rule number 1, don’t bury the lead under stupid distortion effects.
