Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them

If you put a gun to my head and made me pick a favorite, all-female Japanese rock band, I’d probably have to choose Cibo Mato. Also, I’d probably tell you that you’re really violent about demanding declarative decisions in regards to my personal preferences of which international rock bands I enjoy the most.

That being said, I really like and respect Shonen Knife, even if I don’t know that much about the group. I recall them kind of being a minor thing in the states during the mid-90s. Kurt Cobain said he liked them, an endorsement of so much clout  for the time that pretty much guaranteed any act who got it  at least an early afternoon slot at Lollapalooza.

But Shonen Knife had developed a pretty rabid following in the states even before Kurt was talking about them in the press. By 1989 the group was popular enough for inide label Giant Records to compile Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them, a collection featuring American bands covering their favorite songs by the Japanese rockers.

Even as someone who doesn’t know a lot about Shonen Knife, I think this album pretty much kicks all kinds of ass. Just look at some of the acts who grace this record: Sonic Youth, Reverb Motherfuckers, The Mr. T Experience, Babes In Toyland, L7, Red Kross! It’s like a who’s-who of noise, indie and riot-grrl.

At times though the album is less of a “who’s who” and more of a “who’s that?” Sadly, many bands on this compilation went nowhere, some aren’t even credited on Discogs for any release aside from this record. And there are four bands on the album (Project Jenny & Teen Steem, Ella Ohne Die Schwarzen, Dem Choclodytes and The Maynards) whose only appearance on any release ever is on the 2LP edition of the album, their songs aren’t on the single LP version or even the CD edition of the record. How’s that for your obscure randomness?

Even more obscure than those songs though is the cover of “Cycling is Fun” by Pandoras. It’s on the tracklisting for the 2LP edition but it’s actually nowhere to be found on the record itself. It only exists as a concept! Now that’s some underground shit.

I’m only offering this is as a complete album download, because I really don’t want to set up 32 separate download links. Nor do I want to comment on each song/band individually, as I hardly know any of the bands on this record and I really don’t feel like researching 20+ bands. Sorry! If you have any interesting tidbits to share about some of the more obscure acts on this album, please feel free to share them in the comments though.

    Thank you! Great post.

Cool! I still have an old tattered Shone Knife shirt (with the black cat and thought bubble)… Got to see them at Lollapalooza ’94. Bought some of their records from K records.

If I remember correctly, K records was home to early Beck and Modest Mouse… and Beat Happening.

    Again… a great post.

  3. Drain says:

after their first EP, when Sean Lennon and Timo Ellis joined the band, Cibo Matto wasn’t an all female group anymore.

  4. Lost Turntable says:

Showing just how little I know about Japanese all-female rock groups.

    Thanks!

Big Dipper is a Boston band that originated in the mid-1980s now being championed by Merge Records http://www.mergerecords.com/artists/bigdipper I stumbled across “She’s Fetching” a couple of years ago and then found a 3-CD set in the local library, of all places.

The Three O’Clock was on IRS.

    Oh, those wacky ’80s!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this! It’s… AMAZING to hear it. I love Shonen Knife and I’ve been curious about this record for a looong time… it’s so rare in the UK. However, having a quick listen… the best thing about it is probably the cover! Not to be one of those BORES who say *adopts whining voice* ‘The originaaal is so much betteeer…’ But…

While I’m sure they’re really well intentioned, most of these tributes lack the joie de vivre of the… *chokes a bit* originals! Shonen Knife make simplicity look easy but… I guess while it’s easy being a bit cack handed you can’t fake being gauche.

Shonen Knife are back on tour with their new POP TUNE record and I’m so very happy I’ll get to see them again. They are wonderful and very special.

Anyway, just to say again, thanks for this amazing post.

  7. Ella Black says:

I am Ella of Ella Ohne die Schwarzen. I was given the song Blue Oyster Cult when Phranc couldn’t do it for some reason, and because it was such a rinky dink song, I decided to sing part of it in German and turn it into a bizarre polka. I slowed down one vocal to sound like a man, and played the glockenspiel. The name, in German, is Ella Without the Blacks, as my old band, which was a spin-off of Redd Kross, was Ella and the Blacks. (There are several unreleased E and the Bs recordings, but that’s another story.) I wasn’t totally without the Blacks, however, as Steve McDonald (Redd Kross, Sparks) played bass, and he was our original bass player when he was 12. We recorded this in his bedroom in the summer of 89. I mixed it with Bill Bartell, the mastermind of this project (and sorely missed by us all.)

But wait, there’s more! The Three O’Clock were not The Three O’Clock, apart from singer/bassist Michael Quercio, and I think (I need to ask him) drummer Danny Benair. Guitar was played by Steve Housden (Lawndale, Imperial Butt Wizards – MQ was also a member of them, Ella and the Blacks) played guitar and I played keyboards.
