The David Bowie Post 3: Return Of The Bowie

Anyone out there like these Bowie posts? I’m surprised that neither of them got any comments. Anyways, here’s the last of the stuff from the Bowie Box Set, I should be putting up more random Bowie stuff tomorrow and Saturday though.

Reality
Waterloo Sunset
Fly
Rebel Never Gets Old
Love Missle F1 Eleven
The latest album in Bowie’s massive overture was Reality, and it proved that Heathen was no one-off return to form. Reality is Bowie at his best, incorporating much of what’s made him great over the past 40 or so years and tweaking it ever so slightly to sound new and fresh. When I finally got to see Bowie live it was during the Reality tour and he blew me (and everyone else in the audience) away, playing at a near-manic energy for close to three hours. Between this amazing album and that incredible show I cannot wait for his next release. Bowie is God.

These tracks from the bonus disc for Reality off of the box set are a little random. First there’s a cover of The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset.” Good tune, good cover, although I strangely think that Def Leppard did a better job with the song on their cover album. Next is the b-side Fly. Many of the B-sides from Heathen and Reality were reworked tracks from Bowie’s unreleased album Toy, I don’t know if “Fly” is one of those – good song though. “Rebel Never Gets Old” is a mash-up mix that combines the classic “Rebel Rebel” with the should-have-been-hit-single “Never Get Old” from Reality. They’re two great tastes that go great together. Finally there is a cover of Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s “Love Missle F1 Eleven.” If I ever get a chance to interview David Bowie the first question I’m going to ask him is why the hell he chose to cover this song. I don’t know if I care to know the answer though, because all I need to know is that the original kicks ass and so does his take on it.

  1. Aah, great posts! This is exactly what us Bowie freaks love, some rare songs we battle to find without buying another box set. You are too generous, Turntable!
Btw, I used that nice extended version of Time Will Crawl in my latest mix.
Also, I think Bowie probably did the Sigue Sigue Sputnik cover, because they covered his “Rebel Rebel” around the early 90’s… Still not really a good reason though 😉

    Cheers,
    Cygnet

  2. Another comment. I also saw Bowie live for the first time during the Reality Tour. After 13 years of serious fan-dom. It was a wonderful atmosphere as we all sang with him in the pouring rain throughout the whole show that night. Wellingtons’ lovely weather couldn’t bring neither us nor Bowie down!
    May he tour again soon.

Yes, we appreciate these Bowie posts ALOT!-
Bowie fan since my uncle gave my family his vinyl collection, back in the 70s and i picked ZIggy Stardust and David Live.
bought the albums, bought all the singles, didn’t know about the 2cd versions of the Box Sets albums when they came out and debated about the set for only a few remixes(and Waterloo Sunset).
Any chance of posting the Omikron remixes?
    thanks again.

No, the posts are fantastic, but I’m getting bandwidth problems and can’t get the second post’s worth of stuff. I’m living at the fucking end of the universe and can’t get any of these things to save my life (we’re down to WalMart for music), so please, please, please, please try and rectify the bandwidth.

  5. Anyone else having problems? I can download these files fine.

I’m perfectly willing to accept that it’s my connection, but it’s still not working for me.

Fantastic posts! I downloaded everything blindly and rabidly. I wish I had commented earlier, but it’s just that I felt guilty for not being able to mentally come up with a better bandwidth-allowance hosting service :/

Also, since I am an obsessive compulsive language freak, I think by “massive overture” you meant “massive ouvre“.
But most people wouldn’t even be smart enough to make that mistake, therefore it only adds to your “ouvre” of awesome. I know…my puns fail. 😀 ♥

Thanks! ‘Waterloo Sunset’ just might be the last major Bowie song I needed to finish my collection. I never got around to getting the import version of ‘Reality’. I went back and got those versions of ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ too. Good stuff – keep it coming!

I’m getting the bandwidth message as well. On today’s and yesterdays postings. I’ll try back again later, ’cause these posts are great!

The tracks are very welcome. I haven’t seen Bowie live since the Tin Machine tour in the 80s, but it’s nice to find unusual stuff.

I’ve been looking for Bowie’s cover of “Waterloo Sunset”, and here it is!
    Much thanks!
I could have sworn Steve Jones played a different version of Bowie’s cover of it, though, on Jonesy’s Jukebox (Indie 103.1). A more subdued, moodier version.
I like Bowie’s album of early material, LOVE YOU TIL TUESDAY, which includes the rare and hard to find song “When I’m Five” – the video of which is readily available on YouTube.
And the Bowie/Bing X-mas song is classic!
    BOWIE RULES!!
