The Decline Of Western Civilization Part 1

September 13th, 2010

I’m tired, so let’s just cut right to the good shit.

The Decline Of Western Civilization Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
The Decline of Western Civilization Part II is one of my favorite movies of all time, but Part 1 is pretty damn good too. Unlike Part II, which is full of unintentional hilarity, Part 1 is a semi-serious look at some seriously damaged individuals and their seriously great bands (um…and The Germs).  The early footage of X and Black Flag is mesmerizing, while the live train wreck that is the Fear show never ceases to amaze. Just like Part II (and the rarely seen Part III), it’s not on DVD, and I don’t believe the “official” website’s claim that anyone is working on those discs at this point. I have a bootleg. You can watch it on YouTube, and you can find it on a bay where pirates hang out. Get it that way. If they can’t be bothered to put the fucking thing out by now then that’s their problem.

Just like the movie itself, the soundtrack to Decline Of Western Civilization is woefully out of print. The copy I’m offering above is from a less-than-stellar vinyl copy I bought last month. It’s a little scratchy in parts, but it kind of adds to the dirt-punk charm of it all. The X songs sound great at least.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the complete tracklisting included in the zip file above:

Black Flag
White Minority
Depression
Revenge

The Germs
Manimal

Catholic Discipline
Underground Babylon

X
Beyond And Back
Johnny Hit and Run Pauline
We’re Desperate

Circle Jerks
Red Tape
Back Against The Wall
I Just Want Some Skank
Bevery Hills

Alice Bag Band
Gluttony

Fear
I Don’t Care About You
I Love Living In The City
Fear Anthem

I separated some of the speaking parts into separate tracks. Basically if it doesn’t have anything to do with the song that’s playing before it I made it a separate track. Otherwise it’s just like the original version.

Oh, and I put up highlights to Part II a while ago, get them too.

Skunk & Skin

September 7th, 2010

The last of the Skunk Anansie posts, and it’s a big one.

If anyone has a real, legitimate live version of “Selling Jesus” I would be eternally grateful if they shared it with me.

Skunk Anansie
Hedonism (Allegedly Acoustic Mix)
Twisted (Everyday Hurts) (Cake mix)
Pickin On Me (Pick ‘n Mix)
She’s My Heroine (Polyester and Cotton Mix)
Milk is My Sugar (Cement Mix)
Yes It’s Fucking Political (Comix)
Weak (Ackee & Saltfish Mix)
Charity (Clit Pop Mix)
100 Ways To Be A Good Girl (Anti Matter Mix)
Rise Up (Bonhamoon Mix)
You’ll Follow Me Down (Rollo & Sister Bliss [From Faithless] Mix)
You’ll Follow Me Down (Golden Ashes Mix)
Secretly (Optical Vocal Mix)

I always find it odd when rock bands allow their decidedly non-dance friendly tracks to be remixed.  Its an especially odd move for Skunk Anansie, since all their tracks are either emotional ballads about how much love is a motherfucker or aggressive metal about political injustice and racism. I would hate to be Rollo and Sister Bliss when they were handed “You’ll Follow Me Down,” a song about loving a junkie, with the intention of it getting remixed for the clubs. Still, they did a pretty good job.

I would like to know who came up with the idea of a “Clit Pop Mix.” I don’t know if I love or hate that name.

Anyways, these are all from a multitude of CD singles. Thanks to everyone who indulged me in these posts. The next one will have some 80s shit I promise.

Skin
Getting Away With It
From what I can tell Skin’s solo career didn’t exactly take off. That was to be expected in America, but her lack of runaway success in England is kind of a bummer. Both of her solo albums are alright, but are very ballad heavy. Maybe there isn’t a market for a black bald chick singing romantic ballads? It is interesting that she’s is apparently a celebrity of some sorts in non-English speaking Europe, especially in Italy where she had a hit single (“Tear Down These Houses”) on a soundtrack to a hit movie (Parlami d’Amore). Of course, neither are available in America.

Also unavailable in America is Skin’s first solo album, Flesh Wounds; which is a shame because it’s quite good. This beautiful cover of Electronic’s “Getting Away From It” is from that album.

Live Skunk

September 3rd, 2010

This is post number two in my Skunk Anansie love fest. Probably at least one more of these coming next week. I have a shitton of remixes I want to get out there as well. Don’t forget, their new album, Wonderlustre, comes out on September 13th! It doesn’t look like a physical release is coming to America anytime soon, but you will be able to buy in on Amazon!

Disclaimer: None of that was a paid ad. I just enjoy being a whore for bands I like.

Skunk Anansie
I Can Dream (Live)
Punk By Numbers (Live)
Charity (Live)
And Here I Stand (Live)
It Takes Blood & Guts to Be This Cool But I’m Still Just a Cliche (Live)
Intellectualize My Blackness (Live)
Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good) (Live)
The Skank Heads (Live)

In my last post I mentioned that I was moderately bummed about Skunk Anansie’s reunion announcement, because it didn’t include any North American tour dates.  Whenever I listen to these live tracks (gathered from various singles) I just get more bummed because damn, they sound good live. The best bit is at the end of “I Can Dream” and “And Here I Stand” when the crowd goes nuts and Skin just shrugs it off by saying “Yeah, yeah.”

She knows she’s a bad motherfucker.

Skunked

August 31st, 2010

This post, and the next few, will all be dedicated to my favorite band with a black bisexual skinhead lead singer.

Skunk Anansie got back together and have a new album coming out in just a couple weeks! I am both excited and depressed about this. I am excited because, fuck, it’s new Skunk Anansie! I love them! I discovered them in 1995 when I saw Strange Days in the theater (my mom and I were two of the eight people who actually saw that movie in the theater). Their amazing song “Selling Jesus” is in that film, and Skin shows up briefly in the movie,a white cross painted across her face. It was a fucking amazing image, and the song was brillaint. However, this was before the age of iTunes and MP3s, and it took me a year to find a fucking CD by the band in a CD store. I bought their third (and until recently, final) CD Post Orgasmic Chill on import, paying 30 some bucks for the fucker. I still have the CD, but the case melted in my car during a Radiohead concert. Which was annoying. Anyways, in case you can’t already tell, I’m a pretty big fan of the group, which is why I’m depressed as much as I am stoked.

Let’s be honest with ourselves, the newly reunited Skunk Anansie is never going to play America. Their new single “My Ugly Boy” (which is EXCELLENT) isn’t going to crack American radio. Shit, their new album might not even get a proper physical release here in the states. I really want the vinyl copy because, well, I want vinyl. But I’d have to pay import prices for that, which sucks. Hopefully someone will pick it up for a US release, but it’ll probably happen after the online release, which means I’ll be buying the damn album twice. Oh well, that’s two more than everyone else in America most likely.

Skunk Anansie
All I Want (DVS Mix)
But The Sex Was Good
Fragile
Every Bitch But Me
Punk By Numbers
Black Skinhead Coconut Fight

Skunk Anansie, like every British band in the 90s, released 80 billion different singles, each with their own b-sides, remixes and live cuts.  Over the next few days I’ll be putting some choice cuts from these up. These tracks are all b-sides from the “All I Want” single.

Coughing With Soul

August 29th, 2010

I hope everyone is having a nice and relaxing Sunday morning. I am currently in Swanton, Ohio, which smells like a thousand skunks all took shits at once and then died. No wonder everyone here is insane.

Soul Coughing
Rolling (Grooverider Mix)
Rolling (Grooverider Dub)

Sure, it’s no Propellerheads mix of Super Bon Bon. But it’s not that bad. These are from a 12” single.

Paul Van Dyk (Featuring Saint Etienne)
Tell Me Why (The Riddle) (Club Mix)
Tell Me Why (The Riddle) (PVD Mix)
Tell Me Why (The Riddle) (Take a Break)
Tell Me Why (The Riddle) (Take a Break Dub)

That is way too many parenthesis for one track. I hate when songs with parenthesis have additional parenthesis for remix titles. It makes my OCD-riddled head explode a little bit each time. These are from a 2×12” single. Some of these remixes are also available on Amazon, but those versions are all shorter than the versions here for some odd reason.

I hate pösts with umlauts.

August 24th, 2010

Everyone have a good weekend? I had a sinus infection that made me feel like someone ripped off my nose in the middle of night, covered the inside of my face with rubber cement, and then punched me in the head when they were done. So, yeah, fun times. Anyways, I’m feeling much better now (DRUGS!) and hope to have at least one more post this week. Got good shit tonight too.

But before that, important business to attend to! I need help. Well, of course you all knew that already, but this is a specific call for help. Have any of you, my regular visitors, had a hard time finding the site? I know some of you use those RSS feed things, are those working? I just updated my Hype Machine listing, so hopefully I’ll get back on there soon. Are they any other aggregators I’m on that you all know about? I’ll need to let those mothers know about the new adddress too. I still don’t know how many people are accessing this site everyday, I haven’t yet installed a counter yet, mostly because I’m kind of afraid to find out!

I know the fucking spammers have found the site. In the month or so since I’ve relocated I’ve gotten close to 200 spam comments. I’m saving ones from a repeat offender/scam site for another SEO-content heavy rant. So that should be fun. But in the meantime, Icelandic awesome!

Björk
Big Time Sensuality (The Fluke Magimix)
Big Time Sensuality (Dom T. Growly Dub Mix)
Big Time Sensuality (Morales Def Klub Mix)
Big Time Sensuality (Justin Robertson Lionrock Wigout Mix)
Big Time Sensuality (Morales USA Mix)
Big Time Sensuality (The Fluke Minimix)
Big Time Sensuality (Nellee Hooper Extended Mix)
Violently Happy (Masters At Work Dub)
Alarm Call (Alan Braxe Et Ben Diamond Remix)
Alarm Call (Teasmade Dub Swag)
Alarm Call (Alan Braxe Et Ben Diamond Edit)

Hey, I hit the Bjork motherload! And all these tracks are just from two singles (3 records in all). Good times. Some of these tracks sound a little scratchy. I did what I could to clean them up, but it’s a tricky balancing act. It’s hard to de-click and de-scratch any track that has a lot of hi-hats and other treble-heavy effects in it. The result usually ends up removing both. And then it just sounds like shit. I’ve noticed that any Björk record I buy usually has some pretty major problems with it. I assume that is because the people who buy Björk listen the fuck out of it. I’m surprised I ever find any Björk used at all, so I’m not going to complain that much. Also, if your anal retentive like me, you’re going to want to fix a mistake I made with the tracklisting on the Big Time Sensuality tracks, change the total track number of the record from eight to nine. I just noticed the mistake and I’m not going to reupload all the tracks to fix something that meaningless. I’m not THAT insane. Well, maybe I am, but it’s late and my Nyquil is kicking in.

“Love” in The 80s

August 16th, 2010

I really have to figure out what I’m going to do with my old site. But before I do that I want to make sure everyone updates their links. So if you have/know anyone who does link to this blog, make sure their links are updated! Does anyone know if I’m still showing up on The Hype Machine? I haven’t bothered to figure that out yet.

Moving sucks, even in a virtual space.

Killing Joke
Love Like Blood (Version)
Blue Feather (Version)
<
If anyone on the planet can tell me what the fuck “Love Like Blood” is about, or what the singular phrase “Love Like Blood” means, I will be eternally grateful and reward them with cookies. I love this damn song, but i cannot for the life of me figure out what the hell it’s about. I’m assuming the overall message of the song is “love is a motherfucker” but any independent corroboration of that theory would be much appreciated. Both of these “versions” are from the 12” single of “Love Like Blood.”

Holly Johnson
Love Train (Ride The ‘A’ Train)
Love Train (Stoke It Up)
Murder In Paradise<

And if anyone can prove to me that “Love Train” isn’t about dick, then you also get a cookie. Because when the lead singer of Frankie Goes To Hollywood sings “Riding the love train/stroke it up”  (I don’t care what the name of the 7” mix is, he’s saying “stroke’ not “stoke”) I think we all know what he’s talking about. These tracks are from the 12” of “Love Train.”

Lollapadouches vs. the greatest band in the world.

August 12th, 2010

Downside of having this new site? I get about 10-20 spam comments a day. They all use the same form text to make it look like they aren’t spam too, “Great site and very informative did you know about…” Sigh. My favorite was the one that said my blog was well-written and easy on the eyes. We know that motherfucker was lying don’t we?

Anyways, Lollapalooza was last weekend. I was there, I’ve been going to Lolla ever since it became a destination festival in 2005, and I’ll be going to it as long as it remains that way. However, longtime readers of my blog will know that there are certain things about festivals (and concerts as a whole) that really annoy me.  Most of these things are behaviors my fellow concert goers partake in.

The number one rude, offensive and idiotic behavior that attendees at Lolla seem to partake in is talking OVER the music.  What I’m talking about isn’t a passing comment or random “Whoooo!” I am talking about idiots who TALK LOUDLY over the music that is being played.

I will never understand this! Why, why the hell would you pay 200 bucks at stand outside in the horrible humid heat to talk while the band is playing?

Now listen, I’m not a total asshole. I get that Lollapalooza is a three day outdoor festival, and that you’re going to have to talk sometime. And that’s fine. You know what? You can even talk during the music, go nuts. But don’t muscle your way to the front of the stage like an asshole and then blabber about random bullshit while people around you, who actually showed up to the stage early to fucking HEAR the music being played, try in vain to hear the music over your blaring stupid ass voice.

I’ve been complaining about this for three years now. It’s rarely gotten better. This year was exceptionally bad, especially at the DJ stage, where people acting like they were at a nightclub and not a concert venue. So many people were talking over 2ManyDJs that there were times where I actually couldn’t hear the damn music. What the fuck? Don’t they care that some people actually want to hear the music? You may be thinking “talking isn’t that loud,” but guess what, it is. Especially if you have earplugs on. The talking of the idiots around you is crystal clear.

I just don’t get it. At the very least you think people would worry about how they appear to others.

Don’t they worry that some of those people might have cameras?

These two pricks were the dickhead straw that broke my anal rententive back. They. Never. Shut. Up. Not once. Not during the entire performance. Not only that, they seemed to follow me!

There they are again! Still blabbering on, stopping me from hearing 2ManyDJ’s awesome mix of MGMT’s Kids.

Then there was this guy. He appeared to be checking out many asses of women and then commenting on them. Thanks for your input dude, I totally couldn’t tell that one chick was hot until you blurted it out.

You may be thinking to yourself, “Geez, man, it was a DJ set, lighten up. People listen to that shit to party and have a good time.”

First of all, you’re wrong, it’s a concert. Second of all, okay then, what about this backwards cap, iron cross wearing motherfucker? This was during Nneka’s set. Now, for those of you who do not know, Nneka is a brilliant singer-songwriter with an amazing voice. Most of her songs are very quiet. So quiet that if some dickhead in a tanktop wants to, he can ruin it for EVERYONE around him just by talking loudly. Congrats dude.

“What? I can’t hear you? Speak up? Wait…WHAT?”

Okay, talking on your phone during a concert is so damn stupid that they even advise against it in the fucking program. This was during Dragonette, we were about 20 feet away from the stage. The singer (who is amazing btw) was asking the audience to sing along). It was kind of a beautiful moment. A beautiful moment this fucking idiot was not a part of because she thought that was a good time to pick up her phone and make a damn call.

Gogol Bordello is one of the greatest live bands on the planet. These idiots wouldn’t know that though. They never shut up during the whole thing. So yeah, the guys with aviator shades and popped collars were annoying. Shocker, I know.

This one blew my mind. This was during X Japan. These assholes actually tried to talk over X Japan. What was funny was that they weren’t trying it during one of the band’s many slow numbers, but instead during an insane double-bass drum explosive of awesome. (Seriously, X Japan was the shit, more on them in a bit.) Surprise, they couldn’t hear each other. That didn’t stop them from talking LOUDER though, before eventually leaving.

I know my blog isn’t huge. Odds are no one who was a dick at these shows will find this post. And it’s doubtful that anyone who is unfortunate enough to know these idiots will stumble across this page as well. But hell, it sure makes me feel better.

X Japan
Orgasm (Live)
X (Live 1989)
X (Live 1993)
20th Century Boy

Oh, yeah. There was a concert too! Lolla this year was pretty good. I did some blogging of it for Big Shot Magazine. Go read that (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3) and enjoy. If you want to look at the pretty pictures, check out my Flickr.

I would like to comment further on one band I saw this weekend, that band being X Japan.

Holy shit. These guys were incredible. In just one hour they delivered more raw emotion, power, and energy than just about every other band I saw (Foxy Shazam being a notable exception). I knew of X Japan before this performance, but I never really gave them a chance. Dragonforce and Helloween aside, I’m not that into power metal. Goddamn what was I missing all these years? Immediately after getting back from Chicago I bought Blue Blood, one of their only albums available in the states (and the one with the awesome song “X” that is playing above) and have barely stopped listening to it since. Their music is like a double-bass pounding drug infecting my brain with awesome. Damn it’s great.

Sure, hide might not be with us anymore (RIP) and they aren’t as bad-ass as they used to be, but if there is any justice, the newly reformed X Japan will finally take over America (and the rest of the world) when they release their new album.

Most of X Japan’s music is rare in America. Only a handful of their albums were release in the states, so I could really post just about anything. I decided to focus on the live stuff, because that’s where X Japan really shines. These are from various albums and singles that I grabbed online. (Um…just say no to piracy kids.) I think “X” is should be their signature song if it isn’t already, but the live version of Orgasm comes in (punny!) at a close second. Their take on “20th Century Boy” is just silly, but still pretty damn awesome.

Swordfish Break

August 11th, 2010

Just got back from Lollapalooza, and boy are my arms tired. I will discover if my turntable worsk soon. Until then, enjoy some dancing swordfish.

Yeah. I don’t know either. And yes, I know the video goes out of my template’s “frame.” I haven’t figured out how to fix that yet.

Music coming soon.

New Old New Order

August 4th, 2010

I have new (to me) Depeche Mode! Yay!

I have a broken turntable! Boo!

But I found some stuff online to post! Yay!

But I have to write this in Toledo! Boo!

But I also have vodka! Double Yay!

New Order
Blue Monday (Hardfloor Mix)
Confusion (Pump Panel Reconstruction Remix)
Touched By The Hand Of God (Biff & Memphis Remix)
Bizarre Love Triangle (Armand Van Helden Mix)
Ruined In A Day (K-Klass Remix)
Age Of Consent (Howie B. Remix)
Transmission (live)
Such A Good Thing
Theme From ‘Best & Marsh’
True Faith (Pink Noise Morel edit)
Run Wild (Steve Osbourne original mix)

This will be the only post of the week. Because on Thursday I’m making it like Grandpa Simpson and hauling ass to Lollapalooza. I will be honest with you. I did not rip these songs personally, I found them via the magic of the interwebs. They are from two albums, the fifth bonus disc from the New Order compilation Retro, and from the remix compilation (The Rest Of) New Order. Other remixes from both collections have become available on other albums, so I’m not including them.

I have a question for everyone. Why the hell is it so hard for London Records/New Order to get off their ass and release a truly comprehensive box set with EVERYTHING? I want it all. I want the remixes, the single mixes, the b-sides, the remakes, the remixes of the remakes. Everything. I would pay an ungodly amount of money for that. Until then we’ll have to pick apart the various Greatest Hits, compilations and re-issues in hopes of getting all the rare tracks out there. It’s maddening.
