Sub-par 80s Music (and a decent track from the 90s) for your listening pleasure

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I think I only really like one of the songs in tonight’s post. But what can I say? I’m a man of the people. And I’m certain that some people out there really want songs, so I’m happy to oblige.

Are there any people out there who want to oblige me?

…wait, that sounded dirty. Let me start over.

I’m working on a few articles at the moment, and I’m looking for some people to interview.

Do you like video games? Do you like vinyl? Do you like video game soundtracks on vinyl? Have you bought a video game soundtrack on vinyl. If you can answer yes to that last question (and probably the first three as well) then I would love to speak to you. My email address is in the sidebar. Hit me up.

Did you say no to all those questions? Okay, then do you like Joyful Noise Records? They’re an indie label that specializes in vinyl and cassette tape releases. Have you bought any of their super-crazy limited edition releases? If so, I’d love to hear from you. Email. Sidebar. Do it. You know you wanna.

If you answered no to all of those questions, it’s okay, you can still download these songs.

A Flock of Seagulls
Who’s that Girl (She’s Got It) (Extended Version)
Who’s that Girl (She’s Got It) (7″ Version)
Who’s that Girl (She’s Got It) (Instrumental Version)
I came into this post determined not to make a joke about Flock of Seagulls haircuts. But then I realized that’s all I really know about the group. Then I realized that I had no jokes about it, aside from a pun that described the haircuts as “Locks of Seagulls,” but I’m better than that…at least I think I am.

As Flock of Seagulls singles go, this is pretty minor. It’s from their latter years (1985) and certainly lacks the futuristic, crazy out-there sound of “I Ran” and “Space Age Love Song.” It sounds like a generic new wave song from the late-80s, so at least you can say they were ahead of their time in delivering that.

Heaven 17
Heaven 17 Megamix
This is a mix that combines approximately 80 billion Heaven 17 songs, including “Crushed by the Wheels of Industry” and…other Heaven 17 songs. I’ve officially given up on trying to like Heaven 17. Sorry. But hey, if you do, you’ll probably dig this. It’s like Heaven 17 concentrate! It’s the Colombian cocaine of Heaven 17 songs, pure and uncut. I would say its safer than uncut cocaine, but I don’t want to make that claim since there probably haven’t been studies showing the long-term damage that can result from extended use of Heaven 17 megamixes.

Fluke
Reeferendum
This is the b-side to “Absurd.” I think it was inspired by weed. Just a guess. I know it kind of shits on the 80s theme I had going, but like I said before, I wanted to put up at least one song in tonight’s post that I actually liked.

Did I mention that Jay Leno is a piece of shit? Oh, and Human League is really good.

Egad! I haven’t posted anything all week. Sorry about that. Combination of being out of town until Monday, getting a shitload of work done and Mass Effect 2 coming out. Hell, who am I kidding? You can blame the lack of updates this week almost solely on Mass Effect 2 coming out. Yeah, blame BioWare, not me.

You can also blame Jay Leno. Seriously, I usually write these posts while watching Conan. But since Conan isn’t on anymore then I can’t do that can I? As if you needed another reason to hate that big-chinned piece of shit. My dad actually YELLED at me for calling Jay Leno a piece of shit over the weekend. (Context: I’m 30 years old). Yeah, that was an odd thing to nearly come to blows with your father over. Thankfully my dad doesn’t give a shit about anything I write, so I doubt he’ll stumble upon this post, who knows what he would do if he found out that I was calling Jay Leno a piece of shit over the internet…where other people might read it!

I’m just kidding, my dad doesn’t think anyone reads what I write.

Yeah, I’m not bitter.

Anyways, short post tonight, but it’s good stuff if you like 80s synthpop bands who used to be one band but split into two separate bands…yeah, that made sense somehow.

The Human league
Tell Me When (Utah Saints Mix 2)
Tell Me When (Strictly Blind Dub)
Tell Me When (Overworld Mix)

This is 90s Human League, and it’s more straight-up electronic than synthp-pop or new wave. They haven’t released anything new since 2001’s Secrets have they? That’s a bloody shame. I hate it when my favorite bands turn into nostalgia acts. Hey Phillip Oakley! Get off your amazingly talented ass and record some new tunes! I’ll buy them. Sure, I don’t know if anyone else will, but fuck those people, I’m more important.

By the way, there are many more remixes of this song. If anyone wants to share them in the comment section I will be their best friend.

Heaven 17
Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry (Industrial Mix)
Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry (Dub Version)

I posted two remixes of this song before, now here are two additional ones. No matter how many times I listen to this track I am always surprised how much it doesn’t sound like I think it should. A song called “Crushed By The Wheels of Industry” should not be as “up” as this song is. Somehow the “industrial” mix is even more upbeat. It’s a fucking travesty. Good song though – even if its tone and subject matter make it bipolar.
