I’ve been told that Prince had mountains of B-sides, rarities and various unreleased recordings that he’s just sitting on for no apparent reason (save for the fact that he’s batshit crazy.) Prince fans are pretty hardcore, so it’s hard to find singles and EPs that feature any of his classic tracks, nearly everything I’ve seen has been from his “Artist Formerly Known As…” period and who the fuck needs that? I was very happy to find this Maxi-Single for ‘Cream’, that includes several hard-to-find tracks and some awesome mixes of that super-great sexy song. Now if I could only find the single to ‘P Control…’

Oingo Boingo is one of the hardest 80s groups to find rare vinyl for, ranking right up there with The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen, so I’m happy I scored this 12”. Danny Elfmann fans are fucking hardcore man. And, no offense to the Elfmann fans out there, all the ones I’ve met are kind of dicks with lousy taste in music. I’m sure not all of you are, but there seems to be a surprising amount of assholes out there that only seem to like Danny Elfmann and random shit like Ace Of Base and Celine Dion. I have no idea why. It’s kind of like Def Leppard fans (or which I am one) who has a CD collection that is composed almost entirely of Warrant and Winger albums – such a damn shame.

I read somewhere that The Sugarcubes are the best-selling musical group ever to come out of Iceland. Is that true? I’m assuming it has to be, I can’t imagine Sigur Ros or Mum really approaching the level of success The ‘Cubes did anytime soon. These remixes and live cuts are B-sides to two 12” I picked up a few months ago. All of them are happily light on Reinar’s screaming and the live version of ‘Fucking In Rhythm & Sorrow’ is a must-listen.

Lesson learned from New Year’s Eve: When someone offers you homemade moonshine and says “don’t worry, it’s not that strong” they are lying to you.

Let me tell you why PWEI should be considered geek icons. First off, This PWEI song features some radical samples from The Warriors – one of the best cult flicks ever. Secondly, this song also references geek icons such as Optimus Prime and Alan Moore (and it even cites V For Vendetta) Thirdly, their music has been featured in a few videos games, most notable the fun PS1 game Loaded, a crazy little top-down shooter that 12-year-boys should love. And finally, after PWEI broke up leader singer Clint Marhsall went on to score several films, including Requiem For A Dream – the music to which was used in the trailer to Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers. Geekgasm!

Okay, the ‘Howling Mix’ of this song is just retarded, it sounds like someone just decided to randomly insert wolf howls into the song as part of Ian Astbury’s continuing effort to embrace every iconic Native American symbol. Casual fans of The Cult may want to skip it. The 12” Mix on the other hand is a must-have for everyone.

Everyone have a great holiday? I did until my monitor broke and I fried my external hard drive by hooking up the wrong power supply to it (all in the same fucking day.) I became a fan of The White Stripes about five seconds after I first saw the video for ‘Fell In Love With A Girl’ and have been ever since. I’ve seen them live four times and each time they blew my fucking mind apart. I’ve been collecting their singles since before I had a record player and when I got my external soundcard for my computer the first records I recorded were my White Stripes singles. While I don’t claim to have every 45 The White Stripes have released, I have a lot of them. Here are all the Non-LP cuts from every White Stripes single I have.

This is the A-side to a self-titled 45 they released in 2000. The B-side is a silly remix but fun nonetheless.

Two of my favorite live recordings by Jack and Meg, these were recorded in room number 286 at the actual Hotel Yorba. Rated X is a Loretta Lynn song and from what I’ve heard this recording of the song led to her and Jack meeting and the eventual recording her great album ‘Van Lear Rose.’

Who’s To Say…
This is a song by a band called Blanche, it’s the B-side to ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself.’

Do (Live)
This was the B-side to their live version of ‘Jolene.’ It also appears on their live DVD, Under The Blackpool Lights.

Story Of Magi And Silent Night
These two tracks are off of a holiday single the band released called Merry Christmas From…The White Stripes. ‘Candy Cane Children’ is a bluesy track typical of many Jack White songs, while the ‘Story Of Magi/Silent Night’ is an odd and very stilted reading of a bible verse followed by a butchered take of the classic Christmas tune.

This B-side to ‘My Doorbell’ was recorded on June 1st 2005 in Manaus, Brazil.

Walking With A Ghost
This isn’t from a 45, it’s from a promo single I picked up a few months ago. It’s a great cover of an equally awesome song by Tegan And Sara.

This the B-side to ‘The Big Three Killed My Baby’ and is somehow weirder and even more confusing than that song.

Shelter Of Your Arms
This is a cover of a Greenhornes song and is the B-side to ‘The Denial Twist.’ For those keeping score at home, The Greenhornes is the band Patrick Keeler’s in when he’s not in The Raconteurs.

These two live recordings are from the single for ‘The Denial Twist.’ The first was recorded on August 13th, 2005 for 89.9 KCRW in LA, and the second was for Nic Harcourt’s Morning Becomes Eclectic and was recorded on September 5th of the same year.

A great bluesy song (with an AMAZING name) that was originally recorded by The Soledad Brothers, a band from my hometown of Toledo, Ohio!

This one starts slow and then explodes into an orgy of Jack White jamness. It’s the B-side to ‘There’s No Home For You Here.’

This version of ‘Tainted Love’ is off of the 12” single, and is the awesome 8 minute long version. ‘Tainted Dub’ is, obviously, the dub version of the song and this version of ‘Memorabilia’ is slower than the one that appeared on the EP Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing.

This was the first song Bowie released as a single that came even close to being a hit in the US after the horrible experience that was Never Let Me Down. I first heard it over the end credits to the mindfuck that is the movie Seven, and being 15 at the time, served as my introduction to ‘modern’ Bowie. I was hooked and have been ever since. I think Outside is another one of Bowie’s overlooked great albums. It has its weak spots to be sure, but tracks like this and ‘Hallo Spaceboy’ are just unbelievable. These remixes came off of a picture disc I found last weekend. The ‘Alt Mix’ was remixed by Trent Reznor.

In my mind there are three incarnations of Ministry: The early synth-based stuff, The Golden Era, and all the shit they’ve forced us to listen to since. Al, what the fuck happened? was such an amazing album – how does the person behind that end up recording Psalm 69Rio Grande Blood? If you haven’t listened to Rio Grande Blood consider yourself lucky, it sounds like a collection of discarded loops and guitar riffs from better Ministry albums fit together with shitty lyrics about bullshit 9/11 conspiracies. I hate that so many great left-wing musicians and political speakers have been lost to the nonsensical world of “Loose Change” (by the way, keep the comment section clear of 9/11 BS, I’ll just delete it so go peddle your silly little theories elsewhere if you think I’m wrong – because I don’t care). Anyways, these songs are from the ‘Over The Shoulder’ 12 Inch.

The Black Cauldron Original Soundtrack
One of the weirdest movies in the Disney canon, The Black Cauldron is unique footnote in Disney’s past. This 1985 flick was their attempt to tap into the teen market and it was a MAJOR bomb. It came out in 1985 but they didn’t put it on video until the late 90s. I personally don’t like the flick that much, but this score by Elmer Bernstein is pretty decent. Of course it was never released on CD and is now only available on iTunes. I picked the vinyl up last week along with all the other insanely rare soundtracks I’ve been posting lately. A great record for Disney completists.

Berlin – Information
What the fuck? I didn’t even know this album existed until I stumbled upon it last week. Aside from John Crawford this incarnation of Berlin has nothing in common with the classic line-up that recorded songs like ‘The Metro’ and ‘No More Words.’ Terri Nunn isn’t even here, some chick named Virginia Macolino is! Apparently Nunn had left the band for a while to try her hand at acting (didn’t work out I guess). When she came back two years later the entire line-up was different, except for John Crawford. This record isn’t as good as the stuff they did later, but tracks like ‘City Lights’ and ‘Overload’ show the potential that later came to fruition. This album has never been released on CD and should be of interest to Berlin fans and anyone into early synthpop and post-punk music.
