Funky Down Down

Friday, January 12th, 2007

I know I promised more soundtracks and they are coming but I ran into some technical difficulties. I hope to have three more for you guys sometime this weekend. Unfortunately one of them won’t be Jerry Goldsmith’s long unheard score for Inchon, the Korean War movie produced by Rev. Sun Myoung Moon as the record turned out to be horribly warped. Bummer. Anyways until then here are some more lovely tunes from the 80s.

Midnight Oil

Beds Are Burning (Luongo 7” Mix)
Beds Are Burning (Instrumental Ayers Rock Mix)
Beds Are Burning (Percapella Kangaroo Mix)
I swear I will not post any more remixes of this song. Until I find another 12” that has remixes of it.

David Byrne
Make Believe Mambo (12” Remix)
Make Believe Mambo (Acid Remix)
This is a mambo song by David Byrne, I don’t think we need an acid remix for it to trip us out.

U2
Desire (Hollywood Remix)
Hallelujah Here She Comes
I was one of five people in the late 80s that didn’t like U2, but even I dug ‘Desire.’ This is a very 80s remix that inserts random news clips about violence and politics to give the song that ‘intense’ feel. ‘Hallelujah Here She Comes’ is the b-side to Desire that was also on that B-sides collection U2 sold with their Greatest Hits CD for about two-and-a–half days before pulling them off the shelves because they’re tools.

The English Beat
I Confess (Special Dance Mix)
To the 15 people that have emailed me asking for an extended remix of ‘Save It For Later’: I don’t have one, so stop it already! If I ever do I promise I’ll post it right away and not save it for a later post. Wow that was a bad joke.

Pseudo Echo
Funky Town (Dance Mix)
Man, wouldn’t it be totally awesome if Funky Town was an actual place?!? You totally know George Clinton and Bootsy Collins would live there, fuck they’d probably be the mayor and sheriff (respectively). I don’t think anyone was ever clamoring for a cover of ‘Funytown’ by Lipps Inc., but Pseudo Echo (some band from Down Under) actually pulled it off.

Gene Simmons vs. Monica’s Boyfriend in a battle to the death

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

More rare soundtracks! I might even have a second post later tonight if you’re lucky (and I’m not lazy.)

Leviathan
The first of many Jerry Goldsmith scores I’ll be putting up this week. Remember when this movie came out? For some reason underwater sci-fi/horror was the shit in 1989, because this movie, the equally dreadful Deep Star Six and The Abyss (light years better than both of those movies) came out all around the same time. This one is a total piece of shit rip-off of Alien, so it only makes sense that they got Jerry Goldsmith to do the score (he did the score for Alien too). I don’t know why he said yes to this one, but a lot of amazingly talented people somehow got sucked into this movie including Peter “Robocop” Weller, Daniel Stern, Richard Crenna and Ernie Hudson. It was directed by George P. Cosmatos, a man who made the occasional good movie, including Tombstone and The Cassandra Crossing. This was NOT one of those. The score is pretty good though.

Runaway

More Jerry Goldsmith! This is a rather unusual score from him. First off it was performed enitrely on Yamaha digital keyboards. Secondly, it doesn’t sound like the typical Jerry Goldsmith score, it’s occasionally very atonal and jarring. I like it a lot not only because it sounds so unique, but because I’m a big fan of the movie it comes from. Runaway, for those of you who have not seen it, it’s a crazy sci-fi cop/action movie set in the future where robots are a part of everyday life. It was written and directed by Michael Crichton and has a great 80s cast that includes Tom Selleck and Kirstie Alley and also stars Kiss’ Gene Simmons as the evil bad guy! It also had all these sweet killer robots that injected people with acid, and an awesome gun that had heat-seeking bullets. All in all, the perfect action movie for an eight-year-old boy with an amazing ability to suspend disbelief.

Enemy Mine
My junior high history teacher loved this movie a lot. On finals day we had all our work done so he just put in his VHS tape of this movie. We didn’t pay that much attention to it but he was fucking riveted. He was a huge Civil War buff so maybe the movie’s message that we are all brothers and shit really hit home for him or something. Anyways, this score is by Maurice Jarre, who’s best known for his work on Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence Of Arabia, but also contributed scores to films like Fatal Attraction and Witness.

Rocket All Night

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

I was able to find some stuff by some artists that I already haven’t posted about 5 milllion times already! So if you’re sick of New Order, A-ha and Ministry (although how could you be?!?) here’s some stuff that might surprise you (and some more Love & Rockets because I felt like it.)

Love & Rockets
Mirror People (Live)
David Lanfair
No Big Deal (12” Mix)
1000 Watts Of Your Love (Live KROQ Recording)
No Words No More (Live KCRW Recording)
These are the rest of my Love & Rockets tracks, so don’t go asking for anymore. I’m actually not that big a fan of the group (I’m more of a Bauhaus fan myself) but I dug most of these especially the live version of ‘1,000 Watts Of Your Love’ which is a live recording from a radio show. On the other hand ‘David Lanfair’ is one of the strangest things I have ever heard, and I have no idea what the fuck is going on when I listen to it. If anyone would like to shed some light on it please do.

Prince
Cream (NPG Mix)
Things Have Gotta Change (Tony M. Rap)
2 The Wire
Get Some Solo
Do Your Dance (KC’s Remix)
Housebangers
Q In Doubt (Remix)
Ethereal Mix
I’ve been told that Prince had mountains of B-sides, rarities and various unreleased recordings that he’s just sitting on for no apparent reason (save for the fact that he’s batshit crazy.) Prince fans are pretty hardcore, so it’s hard to find singles and EPs that feature any of his classic tracks, nearly everything I’ve seen has been from his “Artist Formerly Known As…” period and who the fuck needs that? I was very happy to find this Maxi-Single for ‘Cream’, that includes several hard-to-find tracks and some awesome mixes of that super-great sexy song. Now if I could only find the single to ‘P Control…’

Radiohead
Paperbag Writer
Where Bluebirds Fly
I Am A Wicked Child
I Am Citizen Insane
These are B-sides to two ‘Hail To The Thief’ singles and add further evidence to my theory that Thom Yorke wants to be Aphex Twin when he grows up.

Someone Oingo’d my Boingo

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

I’ve noticed that I’ve been posting tracks by the same bands recently. I’ll try to mix it up in the coming weeks, I’m just trying to clear out some of the stuff that’s been sitting on my to-do shelf lately. I have some other stuff already done I wanted to upload, but it’s currently on my fried hard drive that my computer geek friend says she’ll recover for me later this week. Until then here’s some more good 80s stuff.

Erasure
A Little Respect (12” House Mix)
A Little Respect (12” UK Mix)
A Little Respect (12” Vocal Mix)
Who Needs A Love Like That (The Love That Mix Version)
Push Me Shove Me (That Rough and Tumble Mix)
Heavenly Action (Divine Mix)
I have eight remixes of ‘A Little Respect’ but I figured these three were enough. Even I have to show a little restraint once in a while. All of these tracks are B-sides to various 12” singles.

OMD
Secret (New 12” Mix)
Secret (Old 12” Mix)
Telegraph (Live)
‘Secret’ is a really good song that in my opinion is nearly ruined by that really annoying voice that pops up during the chorus to whine ‘Seeeecreeeet.’ Good mixes regardless. This live version of ‘Telegraph’ is from a 1983 concert.

Oingo Boingo
Not My Slave (Extended Mix)
Not My Slave (Club Dub Mix)
Oingo Boingo is one of the hardest 80s groups to find rare vinyl for, ranking right up there with The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen, so I’m happy I scored this 12”. Danny Elfmann fans are fucking hardcore man. And, no offense to the Elfmann fans out there, all the ones I’ve met are kind of dicks with lousy taste in music. I’m sure not all of you are, but there seems to be a surprising amount of assholes out there that only seem to like Danny Elfmann and random shit like Ace Of Base and Celine Dion. I have no idea why. It’s kind of like Def Leppard fans (or which I am one) who has a CD collection that is composed almost entirely of Warrant and Winger albums – such a damn shame.

Ultravox
All Stood Still (Remix)
Alles Klar
Keep Trying
I’m a pretty big Ultravox fan but I really can’t see any big differences between this remix of ‘All Stood Still’ and the original. The two B-sides (which are only available on some compilations) are nice ones though.

Sugarcubes
Birthday (Icelandic Version)
Cold Sweat (Instrumental)
Cold Sweat (Meat Mix)
Cold Sweat (Live)
Cowboy (Live)
Fucking In Rhythm & Sorrow (Live)
I read somewhere that The Sugarcubes are the best-selling musical group ever to come out of Iceland. Is that true? I’m assuming it has to be, I can’t imagine Sigur Ros or Mum really approaching the level of success The ‘Cubes did anytime soon. These remixes and live cuts are B-sides to two 12” I picked up a few months ago. All of them are happily light on Reinar’s screaming and the live version of ‘Fucking In Rhythm & Sorrow’ is a must-listen.

Alan Moore Knows The Score

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

Lesson learned from New Year’s Eve: When someone offers you homemade moonshine and says “don’t worry, it’s not that strong” they are lying to you.

Pop Will Eat Itself
Can U Dig It? (Justin Strauss 12” House Mix)
Can U Dig It? (Justin Strauss 12” Vocal Mix)
Let me tell you why PWEI should be considered geek icons. First off, This PWEI song features some radical samples from The Warriors – one of the best cult flicks ever. Secondly, this song also references geek icons such as Optimus Prime and Alan Moore (and it even cites V For Vendetta) Thirdly, their music has been featured in a few videos games, most notable the fun PS1 game Loaded, a crazy little top-down shooter that 12-year-boys should love. And finally, after PWEI broke up leader singer Clint Marhsall went on to score several films, including Requiem For A Dream – the music to which was used in the trailer to Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers. Geekgasm!

The Cult
She Sells Sanctuary (Howling Mix)
She Sells Sanctuary (12” Mix)
Okay, the ‘Howling Mix’ of this song is just retarded, it sounds like someone just decided to randomly insert wolf howls into the song as part of Ian Astbury’s continuing effort to embrace every iconic Native American symbol. Casual fans of The Cult may want to skip it. The 12” Mix on the other hand is a must-have for everyone.

Big Country
One Great Thing (Big Baad Country Mix)
Look Away (Outlaw Mix)
Song Of The South (7” Version)
The misspelling of ‘baad’ is on purpose, that’s how they have it on the label. I previously posted an extended remix of a Big Country song on here before. These remixes aren’t as good as that one, but are still must-haves. And for the record, ‘Song Of The South’ has nothing to do with the racist Disney film of the same name.

Midnight Oil
Beds Are Burning (Kintore East Mix)
Beds Are Burning (Yuendumu Percappella Mix)
The Dead Heart (Long Version)
I posted a remix of ‘Beds Are Burning’ before and while that one wasn’t all that, these two certainly are. The Kintore East Mix is a nice extended take, while the Yuendumu version is a drastic reworking of the song that is nearly acapella. The Long Version of ‘The Dead Heart’ is excellent as well.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Upon This Tidal Wave Of Youngblood (BBC Music Gideon Coe Session)
Nice version of an awfully-named song by an poorly-named group from NYC. This is the B-side to one of the their singles.

I Can’t Stop Sighing…

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Everyone have a great holiday? I did until my monitor broke and I fried my external hard drive by hooking up the wrong power supply to it (all in the same fucking day.) Now I have to re-rip my entire CD collection, all 100GBs of it. Sigh. I also have to re-record god knows how many LPs that weren’t backed up on my computer. Meh, my collection was too bloated anyways. I’m just pissed this whole thing started cuz I lost the fucking cable to my hard drive (which I still cannot fucking find.)

Let me drown my sorrows in music:

Mindless Self-Indulgence
My World
Pre-Teen Violence
Frying Pan
Lush
Born To Be Beheaded
I fucking hate store exclusives and I fucking hate Hot Topic, so when MSI announced they were releasing a Hot Topic exclusive EP my head damn near imploded. Well, here are all the new tracks from that EP (you’re better off without the remixes of ‘What Do They Know?’

Scissor Sisters
I Don’t Feel Like Dancing (Erol Alkan’s Carnival of Light Rework)
I Don’t Feel Like Dancing (Line Loves Vocal Edit)
Ambition
Fuck it, I’m feeling especially vindictive against over-priced national chain stores. These tracks are from a Best Buy exclusive CD that you got if you bought the CD from them. Or you can support your local CD store and just download the bonus songs here.

I’m Dreaming Of A Jack White Chirstmas

Monday, December 18th, 2006

I promised something special to make up for the fact I won’t be able to post for the entire week and here it is…my collection of White Stripes B-Sides. I became a fan of The White Stripes about five seconds after I first saw the video for ‘Fell In Love With A Girl’ and have been ever since. I’ve seen them live four times and each time they blew my fucking mind apart. I’ve been collecting their singles since before I had a record player and when I got my external soundcard for my computer the first records I recorded were my White Stripes singles. While I don’t claim to have every 45 The White Stripes have released, I have a lot of them. Here are all the Non-LP cuts from every White Stripes single I have.

Good To Me
This tune was written by Brendan Benson and was the B-side to ‘7 Nation Army.’

Lord, Send Me An Angel
You’re Pretty Good Looking (Trendy American Remix)
If you’ve seen them live before then you’ve probably heard this take on this classic blues tune by Blind Willie McTell, it’s the one where he talks about how all the girls in Detroit that wanna do him. This is the A-side to a self-titled 45 they released in 2000. The B-side is a silly remix but fun nonetheless.

Stop Breaking Down (Live At The BBC)
One of many live BBC records the band has released over the years. This is the B-side to ‘Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground.’

Hotel Yorba (Live At Hotel Yorba)
Rated X (Live At Hotel Yorba)
Two of my favorite live recordings by Jack and Meg, these were recorded in room number 286 at the actual Hotel Yorba. Rated X is a Loretta Lynn song and from what I’ve heard this recording of the song led to her and Jack meeting and the eventual recording her great album ‘Van Lear Rose.’

Who’s To Say…
This is a song by a band called Blanche, it’s the B-side to ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself.’

Do (Live)
This was the B-side to their live version of ‘Jolene.’ It also appears on their live DVD, Under The Blackpool Lights.

Candy Cane Children
Story Of Magi And Silent Night
These two tracks are off of a holiday single the band released called Merry Christmas From…The White Stripes. ‘Candy Cane Children’ is a bluesy track typical of many Jack White songs, while the ‘Story Of Magi/Silent Night’ is an odd and very stilted reading of a bible verse followed by a butchered take of the classic Christmas tune.

Same Boy You’ve Always Known (Live)
This B-side to ‘My Doorbell’ was recorded on June 1st 2005 in Manaus, Brazil.

Walking With A Ghost
This isn’t from a 45, it’s from a promo single I picked up a few months ago. It’s a great cover of an equally awesome song by Tegan And Sara.

Red Bowling Ball Ruth
This the B-side to ‘The Big Three Killed My Baby’ and is somehow weirder and even more confusing than that song.

Shelter Of Your Arms
This is a cover of a Greenhornes song and is the B-side to ‘The Denial Twist.’ For those keeping score at home, The Greenhornes is the band Patrick Keeler’s in when he’s not in The Raconteurs.

The Denial Twist (Live)
As Ugly As I Seem (live)
These two live recordings are from the single for ‘The Denial Twist.’ The first was recorded on August 13th, 2005 for 89.9 KCRW in LA, and the second was for Nic Harcourt’s Morning Becomes Eclectic and was recorded on September 5th of the same year.

St. Ides Of March (Live)
A great bluesy song (with an AMAZING name) that was originally recorded by The Soledad Brothers, a band from my hometown of Toledo, Ohio!

I Fought Piranhas/Lets Build A Home (Live At Electric Lady Studios)
This one starts slow and then explodes into an orgy of Jack White jamness. It’s the B-side to ‘There’s No Home For You Here.’

I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself
Another track from the radio. This one was originally recorded for Radio 1 and is the B-side to ‘Fell In Love With A Girl.’

Shoot that poison arrow through my tainted love.

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

I’m not really in a typing mood tonight, so I’m going to keep things brief. But I got good tunes so I don’t think you all will mind that much.

ABC
Poison Arrow (Trevor Horn Remix)
Theme From Man-Trap
Theme From Man-Trap (Lounge Sequence)
Trevor Horn probably produced half the songs on this blog. This remix of ‘Poison Arrow’ doesn’t sound that different to me, but the ‘Man-Trap’ songs are radically different versions of the same song, redone in a slow lounge tempo.

Peter Gabriel
Ga Ga (I Go Swimming Instrumental)
Walk Through The Fire
‘Ga Ga’ is the B-side to Red Rain, it’s the instrumental version of a song called ‘I Go Swimming.’ ‘Walk Through The Fire’ was on the soundtrack to Against All Odds.

Soft Cell
Tainted Love/Baby Where Did Our Love Go?
Tainted Dub
Memorabilia
I don’t need to say anything about this song. This version of ‘Tainted Love’ is off of the 12” single, and is the awesome 8 minute long version. ‘Tainted Dub’ is, obviously, the dub version of the song and this version of ‘Memorabilia’ is slower than the one that appeared on the EP Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing.

Me Take On

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

I’m trying to post as much as possible this week because I’ll probably be unable to post much of anything for the two weeks surrounding Christmas. I’m planning on something big for the holiday though, so hopefully I’ll get that’ll be ready soon. Until then enjoy some more misc. remixes and random 80s tunes!

Luscious Jackson
Deep Shag (Sunny Ray Mix)
Deep Shag (Aqua Magic Remix)
Daddy
Last month I put up some remixes of ‘Naked Eye’ and briefly mentioned LJ’s connection to The Beastie Boys in my post. A week later I was looking over my statcounter info for my site, seeing where I’m linked from and stuff, and I found out that someone got to that post because they did a search for ‘naked boys.’ That’s icky. I don’t wanna know what weird search results I’ll show up in now that I have a post with the words ‘daddy’ and ‘shag’ in it. Vagina.

NOFX
Iron Man
I found this off of some weird comp from Mystic Records. I hadn’t heard of any of the bands on it until NOFX showed up. This cover of the Sabbath classic is….well…um….words don’t do it justice. As far as I know this isn’t on CD.

A-Ha
Take On Me (Extended Version)
When I was a kid I wanted to get sucked into the magical comic book world from this video. But maybe that wouldn’t be that cool after all…

I was only outbid by $155,000

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Someone found a Velvet Underground record for 75 cents and sold it on eBay for over $155,000…and I thought I got a good deal when I paid five bucks for that Halloween III soundtrack. Anyways here’s a boatload of music for those of you who have yet to discover the rarest album in the world while searching through record crates at a flea market.

David Bowie

The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Alt Mix)
The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Bowie Mix)

The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Rubber Mix)
The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Simple Text Mix)
The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Filthy Mix)
This was the first song Bowie released as a single that came even close to being a hit in the US after the horrible experience that was Never Let Me Down. I first heard it over the end credits to the mindfuck that is the movie Seven, and being 15 at the time, served as my introduction to ‘modern’ Bowie. I was hooked and have been ever since. I think Outside is another one of Bowie’s overlooked great albums. It has its weak spots to be sure, but tracks like this and ‘Hallo Spaceboy’ are just unbelievable. These remixes came off of a picture disc I found last weekend. The ‘Alt Mix’ was remixed by Trent Reznor.

Ministry
Over The Shoulder (12” Mix)
Isle Of Men (Version II)
Twitch (Version II)
In my mind there are three incarnations of Ministry: The early synth-based stuff, The Golden Era, and all the shit they’ve forced us to listen to since. Al, what the fuck happened? was such an amazing album – how does the person behind that end up recording Psalm 69Rio Grande Blood? If you haven’t listened to Rio Grande Blood consider yourself lucky, it sounds like a collection of discarded loops and guitar riffs from better Ministry albums fit together with shitty lyrics about bullshit 9/11 conspiracies. I hate that so many great left-wing musicians and political speakers have been lost to the nonsensical world of “Loose Change” (by the way, keep the comment section clear of 9/11 BS, I’ll just delete it so go peddle your silly little theories elsewhere if you think I’m wrong – because I don’t care). Anyways, these songs are from the ‘Over The Shoulder’ 12 Inch.

Siouxsie & The Banshees
An Execution
Quarterdrawing Of The Dog
Cities In Dust (Extended Eruption Mix)
I want my next girlfriend to have her hair. These are off a 12” single.

Berlin
Sex (I’m A…) (Extended Version)
Sex (I’m A…) (Instrumental)
These two songs are the last ones in my Berlin collection. They’re off a promo single called ’12 Inches Of Sex.” That’s the second tackiest thing I ever heard.

Aerosmith
Lord Of The Thighs (Live)
This is the tackiest thing I ever heard. This is off a promo album that was named after Aerosmith’s infamous song ‘Big 10 Inch Record.”. This is a live track that was recorded back in 1978.
