These Daft Punk Remixes are Neither Hot nor New

I think I’m honestly starting to make some headway on my other, oft-delayed website. I should have some updates soon. Moving everything off of Nearly Free Speech (scam server site) took a lot of time and set everything back. Now that things are back on track I should be able to get that going sooner rather than later. My goal is to launch by April. Let’s see how that works out. Here’s hoping.

People (mainly British) seem to dig it when I post Renegade Soundwave tracks. These are for them, not for me. While I’ve just recently discovered RS, and loved most of what I’ve heard, I fucking hate this song. It’s, quite frankly, kind of gross, and not good enough to earn it in my opinion. But hey, if you love it, go at it and enjoy!

It seems that everyone is going crazy for new Daft Punk. The hype is reaching such ludicrous levels that the group even put out a 15 second ad that aired during SNL a couple weeks ago. That’s insane! How the hell did Daft Punk’s next album suddenly become the most anticipated record in all of music? Was it just because of a process of elimination? Did the music press have to find a new “OMG where is it?” release after My Bloody Valentine and Godspeed! You Black Emperor finally released new records (and after everything supposedly associated with Dr. Dre’s long-delayed Detox has sucked)?

I just don’t get it. These are the same people who were underwhelmed by the group’s soundtrack to Tron Legacy; the same circle of critics and hipster assholes who dismissed Human After All completely because it had the gall to be an electronic dance album and not another dance/pop hybrid like Homework. Where did this idolization come from?

Maybe its an ‘absence makes the critic get softer’ thing, it’s been years since Human After All, and even the most harsh critic of Tron Legacy could write off that supposed misstep as it being a soundtrack to a mainstream Disney film, and therefore somewhat forgivable for not meeting their lofty standards. Perhaps all these critics, in Daft Punk’s extended hiatus, have made the group out to be something they aren’t, a savior of the bigger-than-ever/shallower-than-ever electronic dance music scene, a group that might bring a resurgence in “Intelligent Dance Music” or “electronica” style dance music of the mid-90s. Now I almost want Daft Punk’s album to be a disappointment (for those looking for another crossover record anyways) just so I can see all those jerks get all bummed out.

But  whatever. I’m just stoked for more Daft Punk. Wet your appetite with these remixes from a 12″ single.

Falling into a Pretty Soundwave

Pearl Jam update for those wondering.

Over at the Ten Club message boards there are over 600 posts in the thread petitioning for a re-release of the deluxe Blu-ray/DVD sets. Ten Club’s stance remains that the discs will not be re-pressed, despite the fact that it appears they haven’t even been pressed in the first place due to a manufacturing error. They refuse to say why. The twitter accounts for Pearl Jam and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready remain silent on the matter – despite this, my polite harrassment has not stopped.

The second disc of extras is oddly available on iTunes as a digital download, which I suspect is the real reason why they won’t re-issue the set – another fucking exclusivity deal. I find it odd that Pearl Jam is more than happy to take money from big businesses, but not from eager fans who are more than willing to pay for this content.

Since they aren’t though, if you are a Pearl Jam fan and want this footage, I suggest you steal it from torrents, it’ll be up there soon enough. I bought the second disc of extras on iTunes and while the content itself is AMAZING, the presentation blows, the video quality is shit, and you can’t burn it to disc (on a related note, if you know how to do this, let me know).

Anyways, enough of this depressing corporate bullshit, let’s listen to an incredibly odd assortment of 80s dance music.

Shockingly enough, both of the singles from which I got these songs came out in 1987. They sound like they were recorded in different dimensions, let alone different years.

I think this song is right up there with Stacey Q’s “Two of Hearts” as “the most 80s shit ever.” In fact, I think it might be even more 80s than “Two Of Hearts.” While both feature that awesome “let’s sample the lead singer’s vocals and play it on the keyboard” effect, “Catch Me (I’m Falling)” edges out “Two of Hearts” in a few ways in terms of all-out-80s-amazingness. First of all, it was featured in the soundtrack to Hidin’ Out, a movie starring Brat Packer Jon Cryer. Secondly, the lead singer’s name is Jade Starling. Thirdly, and most importantly, its video is bloody amazing, filled with just about every 80s dance video stereotype imaginable. Random people jumping through the air? Check. Giant dyed hair? Triple check. A keytar? Fuck yeah check (oh, and the dude playing the keytar went by the name Whey Cooler. WHEY COOLER!). And a random shot of someone singing while looking through the blinds at sunset? Oh yeah check.

Most 80s shit ever.

I’m not going to lie, between the artists I’m posting tonight, I’d much rather listen to the Pretty Poison remixes than these cuts by Renegade Soundwave. “Catch Me (I’m Falling)” may be dumb as shit, but it’s also catchy as shit, and as a result, more than a little bit brilliant. “Kray Twins” is just…well…weird? I don’t even know. I usually love me some Renegade Soundwave too, but I just do not get this song. I thought my turntable was playing at the wrong speed at first. But hey, it’s still worth a listen or two. I do enjoy the last remix, some proto-DNB in there for sure.

Also, The Kray Twins were real people. Read up on them, fascinating stuff.

Too Tired For a Title – The Sequel

Big ups to my Melbourne connection for hooking me up with the elusive Dreamcast vinyl! Dude if you ever need someone whacked, or if you just need someone to get you something off of a high shelf let me know. This giant vinyl/video game nerd is forever in your debt.

Unrelated note, “Manphibian” totally sounds like a Roger Corman movie that never happened. Maybe a sequel to “Sssssss” (and yes kids, that the name of a real movie). And for some musical diversity, its time to rock the motherfucking bells.

The original version of this track is crazy. First of all, it has actual bells. Something that is lacking from the album cut. It’s also seven minutes long, is completely lacking anything resembling a chorus, and has the fidelity of a track that I might record in my closet with an 8-track recorder and a Fischer Price microphone. Although that might have more to do with the quality of the vinyl I ripped it from, which looked like it was taken through a pack of wolverines. I cleaned the hell out of this fucker (both digitally and literally) and I think it sounds pretty good now, I hope you all agree.

Also included as a bonus is the “Bittersweet Symphony/Rock the Bells” mashup mix from the excellent game DJ Hero. I don’t know why, but this mix pumps me up like nothing else. I think it’s the whole “L.L. Cool J. is hard as HELL” bit, which is stretched out a little bit in this mix. I used to have it on my jogging mix, but it pumped me up to such a dangerous degree that I had to remove it in fear of giving myself a heart attack. Same thing happened when I used to have “Red Cape Diver” by Foxy Shazam on my workout mix. Some songs are just too motivational! I should just stick to the classics.

“Cocaine Sex”  is unapologetically pro-cocaine in such a way that its damn near quaint. At one point it even goes as far as to recommend that you “buy it” and “try it.” Gotta love that reckless regard for social responsibility. If your knowledge of blow was limited entirely to that song then you’d probably want to go out and snort some snow right after listening to it. If you’re looking for an anti-drug counterargument to the rampant “Just Say Yes!” philosophy of “Cocaine Sex” then just listen to “Kray Twins.” Its the kind of pointless stupidity that would only sound good while high. Both these tracks are b-sides to Renegade Soundwave’s amazing “Biting My Nails.”
