Fuck yeah, Yes remixes! Is synthpop Yes the best Yes? Probably not. But it is the “best” Yes.

I have a strange fascination with Yes that I still can’t really explain. I don’t know why. I only own a handful of Yes records, and I don’t even think I’ve listened to all of them. I actually know very little about the band, a fact that I’ve been wanting to remedy in recent months. Actually, I’ve toyed with the idea of buying all of Yes’ records and reviewing them all, in chronological order, simply as a writing exercise and as a personal quest to find out for myself what the hell they’re all about. I might still do it someday. Prog rock is hella big in Japan after all. This despite the fact that drugs of any kind are nearly impossible to find there. The wonders never cease.

Anyways, these remixes really aren’t prog rock. As I said before, this is synthpop Yes. Like all synthpop Yes, this song was co-written and produced by Trevor Horn, so sometimes I like to close my eyes and imagine Frankie Goes To Hollywood covering it.

Can you imagine a Frankie Goes To Hollywood/Yes collaboration!?! Oh man, why didn’t that happen? That’s the greatest tragedy of the 1980s.

There was a TV show in 1985 called Street Hawk. It was about an ex-cop who fought crime with the help of a super-powered motorcycle. The theme song was by Tangerine Dream.

So…yeah. So…okay…so…I don’t even know where to begin with that entire statement. I need to let that sink in. Y’know what? Let me watch the opening credits to the Street Hawk TV show, maybe that will help me figure out how to put my thoughts to words.

HOLY SHIT HOW COME MORE PEOPLE DIDN’T WATCH THAT SHIT IT’S LIKE KNIGHT RIDER BUT WITH A MOTORCYCLE AND A SOUNDTRACK BY TANGERINE DREAM OH MY GOD.

Ahem.

Yeah, okay. I can’t comment on that. It speaks for itself. I got noting – maybe if I watch that opening again.

AND THE DUDE’S NAME IS JESSE MACH!? WHY? WAS “JOHNNY FAST” TAKEN?!

Wow. Okay, seriously, all of you need to read the Street Hawk wiki, because someone put a lot of effort into making sure everyone knows that Street Hawk is currently available on DVD (ORDERING NOW) and that at one point there were Street Hawk toys and even freakin’ Street Hawk novelizations.  And then check this incredible Street Hawk fansite. Because if you don’t, who will? Aside from the apparently millions of dedicated Street Hawk fans out there.

Wait a second, this site even has Street Hawk fan-fiction.

Drew Barrymore could kick The Prodigy’s Ass

Its going to be another week of weird/stupid/bizarre soundtrack selections at Lost Turntable! I know they’re everyone’s favorite. And by “everyone” I mean the copyright police. So get them fast.

Firestarter was by far the best movie from 1984 about a pyrokenetic pre-teen girl. It starts Drew Barrymore as the title character, who is on the run with her father from The Shop, a covert government agency whose experiments gave both Drew’s father and mother psychic powers that she somehow inherited. Its about as silly as it sounds, but it has its appeal, mostly because its fucking BRUTAL. The dad has mind control powers that he uses to force people to commit suicide, and at the end of the movie Drew unleashes hell (almost literally), setting about what seems like half of the greater New England area in the process. Its pretty epic. The effects of people getting set ablaze are pretty excellent, and I still don’t know how they engineered some of the scenes where you see people get lit up and fly 50 feet in the air.

While Not as blazingly amazing as that finale, the soundtrack to Firestarter is pretty good. It’s by no means Tangerine Dream’s best, Risky Business, Legend, and even Flashpoint are better, but its still great ambient music. Listen to it while meditating, or to maybe help develop your psychic powers.

Later this week I will be posting the soundtrack to the dumbest movie of 1983. A no-prize to the first person who guesses what that is.

Dreaming Of Tangerines In Space

Haven’t gone through all the links yet, but I’ve already discovered some pretty sweet ones thanks to you people. There are so many good sites out there but for every quality blog there are 50 that are pure shite, so thanks everyone for acting as my filter. Now here’s some music no one will want as a reward.

FM – Black Noise
A great Canadian rock trio that specializes in space-themed prog. Rush? Fuck no! I’m talking about FM! FM is awesome, well at least this album is, I haven’t been able to find anything else by the group. How awesome is FM you ask? Well, for starters they don’t have a guitar player! That’s right motherfuckers, they rock it with glockenspiels, mandolins and electric violins! Need more proof? One of their early members was a guy called Nash the Slash, and look at him! Black Noise is all sci-fi insanity, with amazing song titles like “Slaughter In Robot Village,” “Dialing For Dhrama” and “Phasors On Stun.” If Rush is too low key and subtle for you then FM is your band. Much better lead singer too – although that’s not saying much when your comparison point is Geddy Lee. According to Wikipedia (which is always right) Black Noise is in print, but I can’t find a copy new anywhere – only overpriced and used. So its hard enough to find for me to justify putting the whole thing up.

Flashpoint – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Treat Williams and Kris Kristofferson find a wrecked Jeep in the desert that had a dead body, a rifle and a shitload of money. The dead dude is the guy who killed Kennedy and the money was his reward. So of course Kirstofferson and Williams try to keep the money. Sounds like the best movie ever made doesn’t it? But wait, Rip Torn is in it! It IS the best movie ever made. Need further proof? Tangerine Dream provided the soundtrack, well most of the soundtrack, the title track is by a band called The Gems and it has to be one of the worst pieces of shit ever put to vinyl. This is another one of Tangerine Dream’s out-of-print and overlooked 80s soundtracks to a movie no one ever heard of, and is worth a listen if you like them. The opening track is especially good.
